About 50 miles from the British capital London lies the town of Cambridge, Cambridgeshire and is known throughout the world for having one of top universities of the world, the University of Cambridge. If you want to get a true feel of this academic town you should take a ride aboard a punt. A punt is a flat bottomed boat without a keel and is propelled using a pole known as the Quant. This type of boat is ideal for navigating in the shallow waters. The River Cam flows through the city centre and is packed with punts during the summer months. The history of punting in Cambridge dates back to the medieval period when punts were used to navigate the shallow marshland areas like the Fens in North-east Cambridge. Punts were also useful to carry heavy loads as the flat bottom did not sink deep allowing transportation of cargo across the shallow waters. You may be amused to know that according to a legend punting in Cambridge was started by the women of Girton College in an attempt to show off their ankles. The end of the 19th century saw a decline in commercial punting but gave rise to punting for pleasure and a visit to Cambridge will not be complete without having a go! On a punting trip on the River Cam you will have a chance to admire the backs of the famous colleges of the city, the King’s College Chapel, Bridge of Sighs and time allowing you can also make a trip to Grantchester, the village of the famous poet Rupert Brooke.
