A home is a personalised space which has a unique charm of its own. It is obvious that you would want to decorate it well and making it emanate good vibes when you return after a tiring day at work. Despite a well-maintained and classic decoration, if your home stinks unbearably, it is an issue to ponder upon and act. You would not want your guests or other occupants to feel uncomfortable in their own space. To get a waft of fresh and fragranced air as soon as you enter your home decor, potpourri serves a useful purpose to eliminate the unwanted smell. Along with its functional value, potpourris also gel with your surrounding furnishings and enhance the overall look of your house. Potpourri is essentially a mixture of dried, naturally fragranced botanical materials, used to provide a pleasant natural scent inside your home decor. A potpourri is a decorative item usually fixed to a bowl or tied in small sachet made from sheer fabric in order to hold the scent or scented aroma oils. Most of the modern potpourris consist of fancy dried plant materials sprinkled with strong natural and synthetic perfumes to make your home smell nice. To scale up the aesthetic value and give it a volume, some items which are not related to plants, are also mixed with the potpourri. In order for the scent to be absorbed in the mixture, usually orris root is used for this purpose. Researchers have identified a large number of plants which can be used in a potpourri. However, you can give a personalised touch to your Potpourri by making one yourself. Adding your own combination of botanicals with a scent of your choice will give a pleasant fragrance in your house. Choose the elements of the mixture which can include a variety of flower petals, flower heads, cones, pods, seeds, moss, bark, berries, leaves or even shells. While selecting these, you can happily experiment with the colour scheme, texture and blend. You can go for bright colours, bold or a blend of monochromatic colours in accordance to your home decor and mood. Textures form an integral part of developing the combination of mixture. Catering to the modern household designs, large chunky botanicals with lots of textures look wonderful. A number of tiny botanicals give a delicate and more natural appeal to the mixture. Generally, a potpourri blend comprises of atleast three different types of botanicals. You can make your potpourri based on your various moods. You can add more botanicals to the previous mixture with a different scent, in order to alter the fragrance. Fixative forms an important part when it comes to potpourri. It is mainly used to absorb and hold the scent of the oil in the mixture to add that lingering effect. It provides a long-lasting effect to the potpourri for better results. Fixatives are available in various forms. Some traditional ones include orris root, bark, wood shavings, vermiculite and Fiberfix. Preferably, Fibrefix is the ideal type which holds the scent and retains it over a longer period of time. It is affordable and 100% natural and non-toxic, thus making it ideal for a home decor. Fibrefix is insoluble in water, thereby resulting in the oils to penetrate and stay without the moisture from the air affecting the scent.
