Nickel cadmium (NiCd) batteries contain thousands of tiny crystals. If the battery is not fully discharged regularly, the crystals will merge and grow over time. This reduces the surface area of the crystals and the larger they get, the less charge your Milwaukee cordless drill battery can retain. Eventually you find your NiCd battery will not take a charge anymore. You probably don't need to replace the battery, however. You can repair it by initiating a deep discharge. Put your NiCd battery on charge. The battery will take a small charge and you need it to be as full as possible to start the repair process. Remove the NiCd battery from the charger and put it in the electrical device it usually powers. Select a low setting for the device and turn it on. You should discharge your battery slowly to get the best repair. If it's a tool battery, set the lowest speed possible. If it's an application type device, such as a cell phone or iPod, only open one or two applications. Let the electrical device operate until it either turns off or stops running. Remove the NiCd battery from the device and let it rest for about 15 minutes. This will allow the battery to cool. Replace the NiCd battery into the electrical device and repeat the earlier procedure. The Black Decker drill battery will likely still have a little power left. Let the device operate until it either turns off stops running. Replace the battery in the device and turn it on again until it stops or turns off. Repeat this until the device won't turn on or the motor doesn't run. Each time you repeat the procedure you're making the tiny crystals split and break down. This process is what will repair your NiCd battery. Put your NiCd battery into the battery charger and turn on the charger. It should take a charge. Let it charge until the charger indicates the NiCd battery is full. Turn off the charger and put the repaired NiCd battery into your electrical item. You should find the battery has more power and lasts longer. Never leave your NiCd battery in the charger when it's full. Perform the above procedure every six months to increase your battery's life. Occasionally you might find your NiCd battery doesn't show much improvement after completing the above steps. If this is the case, try repeating it once more. If that doesn't work, your Paslode tool battery is probably beyond repair.
