We Talked To Students About Health. This Is What Happened

Health,Fitness,Self Improvement
As you may be aware, my mission is to educate you on how to take control of your health without medication because that’s the way it ought to be. Hippocrates knew this over two millennia ago and it seems that we’ve gone backwards. So when I got the opportunity to talk to high school students about the benefits of alkalising of course I said YES! Here’s how it went..

It all started with Jaya Taki from The Sharlz Taki Foundation. Without her I wouldn’t have had this opportunity and be able to give back in this way so firstly, thank you. It’s funny because when I first spoke to Jaya over the phone I was very dubious of her. She had phoned in to see if we were interested in supporting her cancer foundation launch event. I had just written an article on “Why I Don’t Support Cancer Charities” so you can imagine my skepticism! But as we continued to talk, I realised that she was very genuine and her values and mission aligned with mine. After meeting Jaya I knew I wanted to work with her and was excited at the possibilities our newfound partnership could bring. I rarely meet people with such strong integrity, an open mind and kind heart so meeting Jaya was a blessing.

Sharlz Taki Foundation talk

The Sharlz Taki Foundation was set up by Jaya based on the key principles of self care, self healing and self education (you can read her incredible story here). In order to educate people on how to live healthy and avoid the predicament her 28 year old brother Sharlon ended up in, Jaya runs school education programs to teach students. I was fortunate enough to be invited to her talk with a class of Merryland High School students recently to watch her in action but ended up giving an impromptu speech myself (boy, was I not prepared for that! Hahaha)

The program started off with Chris from Target Life Fitness talking about the importance of exercise but instead of just talking, he gets their hearts pumping! He got the whole class doing push ups, crunches, burpees and squats with the proper technique. Awesome. As many know, Australia is going through an obesity epidemic so it’s vital to stay active and teach children to exercise regularly. Job well done Chris!

Once the students have caught their breath, Jaya shares her very personal story on why The Sharlz Taki Foundation was set up. It’s difficult enough to lose someone so close to cancer but to be able to muster the strength and talk about it constantly requires strength of character and I find that amazing. Jaya visually demonstrates how many sugar cubes (4g each) are contained in each drink, ranging from Red Bull (7 sugar cubes = 28g) to orange juice (10 sugar cubes = 40g) to Coca Cola a whopping 16 sugar cubes! That’s 64g of sugar in one 600ml bottle! Combine a bottle of Coca Cola and a packet of Starbursts in a sitting and you’re already over 15 times the “safe” limit. Sugar is a neurotoxin so imagine what it’s doing to their brain!

Jaya talks about sugar

Jaya goes on to explain the Doctrine of Signatures which basically means that different foods resemble different body parts and that’s what they’re good for. For instance, snap a carrot in half and it looks like an eye. Science indeed shows that carrots enhances blood flow to and function of the eyes. A tomato is red and has four chambers. What else is red and has four chambers? Take a guess. Your heart! There’s ample evidence that shows that tomatoes play a crucial role in reducing cardiovascular disease. And the list goes on.

Next I fumbled my way through a brief explanation of the benefits of water and alkalising. I wasn’t planning on talking so I did the best I could! Thanks Jaya for getting me out of my comfort zone!

Tom talks about alkalising

All in all it was an amazing experience and an honour to have the opportunity to talk to these students. Did they all soak in all the information? I doubt it and wouldn’t expect it. But if we can get through to a few, or even one of these students we’ll all be stoked with that. The great news is we definitely got through to one little girl! Jaya received this message a few days after her talk and was over the moon!

Feedback from student

If I had received this type of education when I was in school my life could have been different and I’m sure many would say the same. I would argue that health education is more important than all the topics taught in school today but why isn’t it on the curriculum? Who knows. What Jaya and the awesome people from Target Life Fitness and are doing to educate our children is noble and so humbling. Well done Team! I hope you continue to give these kids the tools needed to live a happy, healthy life!
