West Bengal is a region known for its rich cultural heritage, arts and crafts and indigenous textiles. This varied cultural and artistic milieu is reflected in the many varieties of Bengali saree designs and types. Most women here wear saris, in cities as well as in remote rural pockets, amongst the rich and the poor. The most easily recognized Bengali saree would be the quintessential Garad or Korial types with the typical look of a red and white saree with large gold and red borders, draped in the specific Bengali manner (without pleats, from back to front). Thought this is the preferred style for ceremonies and religious events, there are many styles besides this: Tant This is the favorite causal or every day wear Bengali saree for women, mainly because it is made of the cool and comfortable cotton fabric, which is perfect for the hot, humid weather in this region. These saris are quite colorful, with large, eye-catching borders and pretty artistic designs. They come with little to no embroidery or embellishments but are nevertheless very attractive to look at. Jamdani These are also usually made of cotton or indigenous raw materials, though they are very luxurious looking. Due to the intricate weaving techniques required to make this type of Bengali saree, they take a long time to craft and were initially only worn by the very rich upper classes, though now less costly varieties are also available. Jamdani fabrics are very fine, almost translucent, with a light and comfortable feel, and are usually hand-woven. Baluchari The process of crafting a Baluchari saree is very long and complicated, involving several stages of treatment for the fabric and weaving as well as embroidery. In their final form, they have a polished, shining appearance, due to the fine silk fabrics and rich designs and patterns. This is another Bengali saree that was originally only worn by the aristocracy due to its luxurious look. They are further distinguished by the use of mythological art on the heavy pallu, which gives these garments a unique look. Shantipuri Another Bengali saree named after the village where it is produced, this garment is also made of fine cotton fabrics woven with unique artistic designs of dots, lines and floral motifs. Tangail These multi-colored garments are originally from Bangladesh and are distinguished by the use of floral patterns, butti designs and modern art on the pallu and along the borders. All of these Bengali saree designs are produced specifically in the Bengal region of India, with some only manufactured in certain villages or towns. However, that does not limit their customer base as nowadays it is very easy to buy a Bengali saree online. This is why one can see women all over India and even in countries abroad appreciating and wearing saris from this region.
