UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon will travel to Paris to attend the International Conference for Support of Libya which will be convened on Sept. 1, and then visit Oceanian countries, according to a note to correspondents issued by the Office of the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General on Tuesday. The international conference of Libya will discuss the need for a smooth transition to a new government. The fight in the North African country currently appears to be winding down, as rebels under the National Transitional Council ( NTC) have overrun capital Tripoli, and Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi is nowhere to be found. After these discussions, Ban will take input to the Security Council, which holds the power to create missions and call for their deployment. "Thereafter he will leave for the Pacific to attend the Summit meeting of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) in Auckland, New Zealand," said the note. As the first UN secretary-general to attend the PIF, Ban will meet with leaders of PIF member states, including New Zealand Prime Minister John Key, as well as Foreign Minister Murray McCully while in New Zealand. Ban will also visit Australia and meet with Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd and brief them on his current UN initiatives in the areas of international security, development, and climate change, said the UN note. He will discuss the unfolding developments in the Middle East and North Africa and elsewhere as well.
