Compaq Evo Diagnostic Light Code Troubleshooting For many years, the Evo line of Compaq desktops was a popular choice for both home and business use, and many of these workhorse computers are still in use today. While these computers usually work very well, it is still important for all Evo users to have some basic troubleshooting skills under their belts. When your Evo is not working normally, the first place to look is the front of the machine. That is where you will find the indicator lights, and those indicator lights can tell you a great deal about what is going on inside your computer. Instructions Red Blinking Light 1 Look at the front of your Compaq Evo for indicator lights. If you see a red blinking light that flashes twice, it is an indicator of a high heat condition inside the machine. 2 Check the air vents on the front, side and back of the Compaq Evo. If any of the vents are blocked by papers or other items, remove those items and power your computer back on. If the light continues to blink, remove the computer cover and check the heat sink fan. Turn the computer on with the cover removed and watch the fan. If the fan does not spin, turn the computer off and check the cable running to the fan. Make sure the cable is firmly seated and then turn the computer on again. If the fan still does not spin, it may be defective. If you notice an accumulation of dust inside the unit, use a can of compressed air or a small computer vacuum to remove the debris. An accumulation of dust can cause the Evo to run hot and shut off unexpectedly. 4 Look at the LED lights on the front of the computer again. If those lights are not flashing but the computer still does not power on, hold the power button down for four seconds and watch for the LED light. If the light turns green but the computer does not start, check the voltage regulator on the back of the unit and make sure it is set appropriately for your region. Five Flashes, Five Beeps 5 Check the memory modules if the LED light on your Compaq Evo flashes five times and beeps five times. This code is an indication that one or more of the memory modules may be bad. 6 Remove the retaining screws on the back of the computer case and pull the case release lever to remove the computer's cover. Remove the memory modules and reseat them. 7 Power on the computer and look at the lights. If the red light still flashes five times and you hear five beeps, turn off the computer and pull each memory module one at a time. Start the computer after each module is removed--this is the best way to isolate the bad module. 8 Replace the bad memory module and close the computer case. Restart the computer and make sure it is functioning normally. Steady Red Light 9 Look at the front of the computer as you start it up. If the red light illuminates and stays on steadily, it is an indication that the processor is either faulty or not seated properly. 10 Shut the computer down and remove the power cord. Remove the retaining screws on the back of the computer and pull the case release lever to remove the cover. 11 Locate the processor and pull the tab to loosen it. Push the processor back in place and make sure the tab goes down to lock it in place. 12 Restart the computer and look at the lights. If the red light is still on steady, the processor will need to be replaced. Red Light Flashes Six Times 13 Check the video card if the red light flashes six times when you start your computer. Shut your computer down and remove the power cord. 14 Remove the retaining screws from the back of the computer and pull the case release lever to remove the computer's cover. Locate the video card and remove the screw that holds it in place. 15 Pull the video card free of the slot and push it firmly back into place. Replace the screw and turn your computer back on. If the red light continues to flash, the video card is faulty and will need to be replaced.
