The opening ceremony of the return capsule of Shenzhou IX spacecraft was held on July 1. Nearly a hundred kinds of crop seeds such as those of wheat, rice and cotton the spacecraft carried have been brought back to the Earth and sent to the experimental fields. According to Yu Qiucheng, a professor at Jiangsu Agricultural Science Academy, space breeding has become an important way to accelerate the cultivation of fine crop varieties. It is briefed that space vegetable boasts a high yield, fast growth and could resist diseases effectively. Besides, the fruits it produces are of high quality with a much higher nutritive value than average vegetables. China’s first case of carrying crop seeds into space was in 1987. Currently, more than 70 new varieties have been cultivated and passed national or provincial examination. The rice seeds of Yangzhou had been brought with the rocket into space in as early as 2004 for its first space travel. Various crop seeds back from the space are bred in breeding bases in cities of Zhenjiang, Nantong, Taizhou, and Xuzhou, etc in Jiangsu province. Yu Qiucheng introduced that it might take several years for space crop seeds to walk out of the experimental fields. Therefore, space crop varieties are still not widely planted in Jiangsu province. “A truly wide promotion may take more than 10 years,” he said.
