Jiangsu will make great efforts in developing green economy and conservation culture, the provinceâ??s governor Li Xueyong said during an interview on the World Environment Day, which fell on June 5. Green economy, put simply, is the economic development pattern with environmental protection and sustainable use of resources as the priority. Environmental friendliness and resource conservation are major features of the green economy. Li said industrial restructuring is fundamental for the development of green economy. During the 11th Five-Year Plan Period, Jiangsu eliminated backward production capacity by a large margin, closed more than 5,000 small chemical companies and energy consumption per unit GDP decreased by 20.45 points, leading the national average. Last year, sales revenue of strategic emerging industries in the province exceeded 2.6 trillion yuan, accounting for 24.4 percent of revenue made by industrial enterprises above designated size (i.e. all state-owned enterprises and those non-state-owned enterprises with an annual sales income over 5 million yuan); production value made in high-tech industries exceeded 3.8 billion yuan, accounting for 35.3 percent of production value made by industrial enterprises above designated size. But as Jiangsu is a densely populated province, land area per person is relatively small, resources are scarce and resources of ecological environment are even scarcer and more precious, the task of environmental protection and preservation of ecosystem remains daunting.
