An 84-year-old woman has sued a beauty salon, accusing it of cheating her out of 160,000 yuan ($25,168) for massage treatments, which instead of improving her health, caused it to worsen. Her complaint was heard Monday in Beijing Fengtai district court, according to a court press release Tuesday. The customer, surnamed Zheng, alleged the massage damaged her lumbar disc. The injury was diagnosed in August 2011, seven months after she bought a membership card. Zheng demanded a full refund of all the money she paid. The branch of Beijing Jinzhu Meirou Beauty Salon in Fengtai refused Zheng’s request for a refund, and again in court. "After a free try-out at the salon, the saleswoman talked me into paying 9,900 yuan for a foot-massage membership card which supposedly could cure my foot injury,” said Zheng. "Several days later they told me to pay another 50,000 yuan for a whole-body massage treatment, the only way to make the foot massage more effective. This situation happened a further six times, and I paid over 160,000 yuan and ended up with lumbar disease. How could they do this to an elderly woman?” said Zheng. The company’s lawyer argued in court that Zheng should have had the common sense to understand that massage could not cure disease. Her expectations were too high, the lawyer said. However, the lawyer could not provide a standard price list for services offered at the salon. No judgment was made Monday, however, Cao Meng, a court publicity official, said the court has heard several similar cases involving elderly customers, and the court had ruled in favor of the victims each time, according to her knowledge. "There are scammers in service industries like beauty salons, using health products to prey on the elderly, because they’re more trusting than younger people and reluctant to turn to police or the court,” said an officer, surnamed Li, from Beijing Consumer Association. There are no statistics of complaints filed by seniors, but last May they issued a warning to customers over rising fraud in the health service industry, and many cases concerned elderly victims, said Li.
