Eggs Are No longer Demonized by Nutrition Experts

Food & Beverages,Government,Health
Foods with cholesterol are now on the “good to eat list” according key nutrition advisory experts. This is great news for all of you egg lovers. Without guilt you can enjoy more eggs sunny side up or scrambled. For years government and the American Heart association have told us to restrict our intake of cholesterol no more than 300 MG per day. Now all that is changing. According to the latest recommendations of the government’s Dietary Guild Advisory Committee, headed by Marian Neuhouser, cholesterol is no longer considered a nutrient of concern for overconsumption. Yes, that means enjoy your local fresh eggs, shrimp and lobster and know that you are putting something healthy, low-fat, loaded with vitamins and minerals into your body.

Every five years the Dietary Guideline Advisory Committee (DGAC) analyzes the US population’s diet, nutritional environment and nutrition related health conditions. The committee uses scientific research as the context and scientific foundation to update the guidelines and make recommendations to assist the US population to adopt healthy eating practices.

According to the DGAC draft report December 2014, Cholesterol is no longer a “nutrient of concern for over consumption.” The committee also identified nutrients that may cause a public health concern. Vitamin D, Calcium, potassium and fiber are under consumed by the entire US population. Iron is under consumed for adolescents and premenopausal women. Sodium is overconsumed. Lastly, saturated fat is overconsumed and may pose the greatest risk to those > 50.

The research has been leaning in this direction for years but the government has been late in responding with the dietary guideline changes. In a recent blog post by Davis Katz, Director of the Yale Prevention Research Center, he stated that, ”my lab just published our third study of egg ingestion, this one showing no discernible harms from daily intake of two eggs per day for six weeks by adults with established coronary artery disease. In prior studies, we had shown similar lack of any discernible harm in healthy adults, and in adults with high blood cholesterol.”

The scientific research in quite conclusive on the subject of cholesterol and diet. Bottom line, including more eggs in the American diet can improve our society’s overall health. Especially if healthy snacks like boiled eggs or egg burritos are substituted for sugar and saturated fat laden snacks like granola bars, donuts, cookies or chips.

Eggs are a healthy, low fat food that can help address the nation’s nutritional deficits. In fact eggs contain six of the vitamins and minerals identified by the DGAC as under consumed by the US population. The list below shows how one egg can fulfill some of these under consumed nutrients One egg contains the following nutrients: Vitamin D 41 IU Vitamin E .5 MG Magnesium 6 MG Calcium 21 MG Iron .9 MG Vitamin A 270 IU's

An egg is one of the most perfect foods and for only 70 calories has an amazing nutritional punch. Not only are eggs healthy and low in calories but they are also very versatile and can be used in a variety of healthy and quick to make snack choices – deviled eggs, egg burritos, egg salad sandwiches and pickled eggs to name just a few.

Now that cholesterol in food is no longer a concern and eggs have so much nutrition, enjoy your eggs and know that you are ingesting something healthy and nutritious for your body.
