How Can Proper Identification of Pet Stains Be a Solution to Carpet Cleaning Concerns

Home Improvement,Health,Environment
Pet urine can delaminate a carpet and can cause rotting of jute backing. Even after a thorough cleaning, pet urine stains and odors often remain. When left alone, pet urine can seep through carpet, into the padding and down to the floor beneath.

Urine can affect the dyes used in carpet. While not all deposits result in a permanent stain, the content of the urine, the dyes and finish used, and the time elapsed after the deposit, are important. Some urine spots may be immediately noticeable, while others may take weeks or months for a reaction.

The color of pet urine and its staining potential will often depend on dietary habits, age and sex of the pet, whether the pet is on medication, and the health of the pet.Pet urine is an amber-colored liquid waste fluid excreted by the kidneys and is composed of waste products of protein metabolism.

The best method to to remove the dog urine is to use a wet/dry vacuum. If you don't own one an alternative method is to place several layers of paper towel over the wet urine area and tread on it so as to soak up as much of the dog urine as you possibly can. You may have to repeat this several times until no more dog urine can be soaked up.

Sometimes dog urine accidents have already dried because you did not notice them previously. You can find dried urine spots on your carpet with the aid of a black light. The dog urine stains will fluoresce under the ultra violet light in a darkened room.

How to check for the presence of pet stains

Turn off all lights. It's best to use your black light when the room is as dark as possible. Shine the black light on the area where you think there are pet urine stains. Make sure to check around baseboards and even a few inches or more off the carpeted surface on walls and other vertical surfaces, as some animals may spray urine horizontally.

Locate the urine stains. Due to the black light, the stains should resemble a green or yellow glow. Once you find areas that are stained, place a paper towel on those areas to help locate the stains with the lights on in order to clean them.

Things to consider:

Urine is NOT bright white under a blacklight. Any stain that appears bright white is typically another substance such as a carpet cleaner or a spilled drink. The residue from these substances fluoresces brightly under a blacklight. Cats are rather sly animals and can maneuver into the smallest of spaces. Take your time and be thorough when checking your house. Locating the source of the animal urine smell is vital, and the earlier it's found, the better. Soaps and detergents should show up as bright white when using your black light. Try not to confuse the cleaners and the urine. Further, visually identifiable urine stained areas may not reveal the extent of the problem readily. Carpet is better than "Bounty" for soaking up liquids. Even when treated properly, carpet cleaners get complaints about the discoloration still present. These discolorations either aren't removed by traditional carpet cleaning, or if removed, they soon return. The problem isn't the odor nor the cleanliness of the spots but rather the discoloration of the area from the pet "accidents" or the chemicals used to try to remove the stain.
