How to Care and Maintain Your Soapstone Countertops

Home Improvement
After navigating the process of choosing the material and color to install in your kitchen or bathroom, you will want to ensure that it stays beautiful for years. Soapstone countertops are an easy choice when you want a combination of both beauty and strength in your surface material.

Overview of Features

This material comes out of the ground in large slabs, similar to granite and marble. However, soapstone is non-porous, making it significantly different from granite and marble surfaces. This difference means that this material has a higher degree of stain resistance, so it will stay beautiful for many years. With the exceptional hardness of this surface, damage will not occur from acidic beverages and foods, cleansers, and heat. Instead of cracking or chipping like other surfaces might, this material would dent from extreme pressure.

Initial Tasks after Installation

After installation, the surface will need oiling, which causes oxidation to occur. Oxidation leads to the formation of natural colors throughout the stone, which enhances its beauty significantly. The installer will provide instructions for applying mineral oil. The general process involves using a damp cloth to wipe away any residual dust from installation and then applying a light coat of mineral oil. Use a dry rag for application, and rub the surface lightly. Allow the oil to sit undisturbed on the stone for approximately one hour. After the standing time, wipe down the counter with a clean cloth. Before your eyes, you should notice the color deepen and become more vivid.

Cleaning Guidelines

Cleaning methods for soapstone countertops are an attractive feature for many consumers. Standard scouring cleansers are effective for removing dirt and grime without harming the durable surface. For light soiling, dishwashing soap and warm water work well. You can also loosen dirt particles trapped in corners with a soft toothbrush and then wipe them away with a soft cloth.

Ongoing Maintenance

After installation, apply mineral oil once each month for the first year. You will know it is time for another application when water leaves a dark spot on the soapstone countertops. When this happens, apply a light layer of oil, leave it on the surface for about 30 minutes, and wipe it down to remove any excess. After about one year, the material will have received sufficient lubrication, and you will cease needing to apply more.

Marks and Scratches

With use, you may see occasional scuffs and scratches. If this occurs, pour a tiny amount of mineral oil onto a soft cloth and buff out the scratch. Most scuffs occur because of displaced oil, and not from actual damage to the material. Light pressure with the cloth usually eliminates the mark entirely.

Expect gradual darkening of soapstone countertops over time. This darkening is the natural progression of this material, which leads to rich tones and deep coloration. Most consumers find it difficult to mistreat or damage this natural stone after installing it in their homes.
