Let's talk about stickers and why I love them.

Stickers, Really? I thought you wrote articles about marketing!?

That’s right; I’m going to use my time to touch on the little rewards children are given for being good. From around three years of age we’re given stickers for being good or at times to simply pacify us. They require no skill-set to use and let’s face it – they’re fun. In our preteens we beg for quarters to get a random sticker from the vending machine at the local restaurant. We grew up with stickers bringing us a little moment of joy. Even in adulthood many continue to love stickers — we put them on our cars, cell phones, computers, iPads, laptops, mirrors and even give them to our children as rewards for being good.

Stickers can be a great marketing tool because they remind us of being young and subconsciously bring back that small moment of joy from childhood. You can amplify awareness and brand your business if implemented correctly (I’ll touch on that in just a moment).

Stickers are inexpensive, people love anything that is free and let’s face it –they stick around (pun intended). With that being said, let’s talk about the three most common materials and the pro/cons.

Paper Stickers: Paper stickers are the least expensive and are commonly found on household products like peanut butter or jelly jars. They are hard to remove.

PROS - Cost efficient, Available in rolls or sheets, Full color, Different shapes

CONS - Indoor use only, Hard to remove, Fade and rip easily, Available in larger quantities

Cut Vinyl Stickers: Cut vinyl is a material that resembles thin plastic with ‘glue’ on one side. Vinyl is available in many different colors and has a variety of options like permanent and semi-permanent adhesives.

PROS - Easy to apply, Easy to remove, Outdoor use, Safe for glass and cars, Buy in small quantities, Great for wording / lettering

CONS - Cost more than paper stickers, Additional cost per color, Cannot have small detail, Longer production time, Can require setup fees

Printed Vinyl: Printed vinyl is very common. Common products include the stickers in restaurant vending machines and sport logos (Goooo Tigers!!).

PROS - Includes all of the pros of cut vinyl, Full color, Great for detailed artwork

CONS - Almost always has a setup fee, Longest production time, Small quantities cost more

When talking with clients I suggest incorporating all three styles into their marketing efforts. Paper stickers are great for incorporating your logo on mail or packages. Cut vinyl decals are great for lettering and silhouettes of artwork (E.G. the Detroit “D” on your car). Lastly, printed decals are great for promoting your brand and detailed artwork. We use printed decals for many client campaigns as they tend to bring lasting exposure and boost brand awareness.

I challenge you to think of a few stickers you received and where you put them. Was it on your car, laptop of maybe on something else? I can tell you where I got all of my stickers from so in my opinion that was a great investment for the company that gave them to me.

Thank you!
