In the UK, October will welcome Go Sober, getting as many willing participants to give up booze for the month. Not an easy task for many of us normal human beings who like a little tipple while watching their favourite soap on the box, or enjoy a night out “sampling” the pub’s delights. A month can seem a long time. Go Sober in October has been prompted by Macmillan Cancer Trust, looking to raise well needed cash for people with cancer. All the money raised by those Going Sober this October will contribute to make sure that there is help from the moment of diagnosis of Cancer, through treatment and beyond. So, how on earth can you keep totally away from a sip of wine or a gulp of beer for a whole month? Well, it’s not going to be easy, and it’s probably worth having two objectives if you are taking up this worthy challenge. It’s not just about objective 1 - Raising money. If it was, then you might as well collect a bit of cash, put alcohol on hold for a while , because once it’s over, you can make it up and have double the amount the following month, and everybody’s happy! And it’s not about substituting booze with “diet” cola or any other type of low calorie fizzy drink (that are packed with stuff you might want to avoid); or going the route of “healthy” fruit juices , that are in fact stuffed with loads of natural sugar. No, people taking up the challenge, should also look at it as Objective 2 - An excellent time to engage with arguably the one fluid that does you good…water. Yes, it’s time to fall in love with water! Firstly, for you men get yourself a pint mug – your kind barman may give you one FOC if you can persuade him to lose your custom for a month for a worthy cause, but then escape the pub ASAP to avoid inhaling excess beer aromas. Get home and feel the warmth of the beer glass in your hand and fill with the finest mineral water, and do the beer gulp. Before you know it, you’ve sunk the pint. Now of course, it’s lacking the perfect blend of hops and yeast, but it will be easier than you think. It won’t taste bad, and after giving it 30 mins to absorb into the body, you will not only feel good about yourself, but your body will also feel good about you! Look to consume at least 3 pints a day (that sounds good doesn’t it?). Women may want to go the wine glass route. Same thing - persuade the friendly local landlord to allow you take home the free wine glass given by the besotted barman, and decide whether you are going the Red, White, Rosé or Clear choice. Once you have decided Clear, then get merry on glass after glass of top quality water from a terroir of your choice. Staying off the booze and getting absolutely sloshed on water can mean: • Increased energy levels • Clearer head • No more hangovers or headaches • Sleeping better / snoring less • Weight loss • Clearer skin • Brighter eyes • Sense of achievement • Fresh approach to alcohol consumption • Generally feeling healthier • Doing something positive for a good cause So, it’s time to get SLOSHED on Water, and Go Sober for October!
