Over the last couple of years, we have seen a steep increase in the number of data centres across the world. The concern related to various environmental issues has made the idea of green data centres more popular among the masses these days. However, such green data centres need more attention from the media. A green data centre acts as a repository for the storage, management, and circulation of data in such way that the energy efficiency is maximized and environmental impact is minimized. There are various measures taken to increase its awareness. As a result, the European commission has recently taken an initiative to make use of the sustainable and renewable resource to power more than Two third of the European data centres. There are various environmental policies that are written by many organizations to help them buy data centre services. Such data centres are operated by minimizing the organizational impact. However, there are organizations that operate the data centres within them. Such data centres do not have any positive impact to the environment. A green data centre is a professional data centre highly focused on environmental efficiency. A very good example is an implementation of hybrid or cloud computing. Moving an organization’s operation to an environmentally friendly and professional data centres have a better impact to the environment. However, with time the things need to be upgraded in terms of standards and approach. There should always be some way to gain maximum efficiency with the new standard and ideas. For example, in earlier days buyers used to think in a more economical way. As a result, they used to get the cooling units for the data centre at the cheapest rate. Direct Expansion (DX) systems were used as they were cheaper. The other factors like energy consumption and efficiency were not considered. However, today, energy efficiency is the primary factor for the DX chiller manufacturers. Factors like Coefficient of Performance (COP) are known before installing any chiller system. In order to promote chiller systems with better efficiency, the government has taken an initiative to offer relaxation in tax for the buyers who purchase equipment with a better COP than the pre-defined threshold. In order to be energy efficient, most data centres backup power using generators. Though they run for a small period of time, but they pollute the environment as well. The effect of pollution can be seen more in urban areas where there are fewer means of getting away with the pollution quickly. However, such pollution can be minimized by using bio diesel instead of old diesel generators. Such bio diesel requires maintenance, which again falls in the environmental responsibilities of a data centre. We can make the green data centre more common, by raising awareness among the public. This is required for environmental responsibility as it is an essential part of life. With everyone involved with the data centres will have a significant impact to the data centre as well as the global community.
