How to Save Money on Heating

Home Repair
When the days get cooler, it's tempting to stay inside to keep warm. After all, nobody likes running around outside in the cold, unless it's to go skiing. Fortunately, you don't have to spend all of your paycheck on heating in Denver if you follow these savings tips.

Seal the Leaks

Even if your house was built in more recent years, it's quite likely that there are tiny holes that allow cold air to come into your home. If you can feel draft near your windows, then it's a more serious problem. In that case, you might have to spend some money on upgrading your windows and window frames in order to keep the warm air inside and the cold air out.

Fortunately, smaller leaks are easier to plug. You can use caulk for small holes and foam for bigger gaps. When it comes to doors and windows, you can also try to tighten them by replacing the weather stripping before it gets really cold outside.

Set the Thermostat Lower

Setting the thermostat a degree or two lower is an obvious way to save money on heating costs. And even though this is very simple and easy to do, very few people think of it. But the truth is that one degree colder may not even be noticeable to you. This means you can save money without exerting any extra effort.

You can set the thermostat as low as you want as long as everybody in your home feels comfortable with it. As a general rule, you should be more conservative where young children or senior residents are concerned.

The great thing about using a programmable thermostat is also that you can keep the temperature lower as a rule, but you can always manually increase it if it's just too cold for you that day. How well you handle temperature changes tends to vary slightly from day to day. You may also feel colder if you're tired.

Wear Layers of Clothing

An easy way to feel warm without cranking up the heat is to put on additional layers of clothing. Wearing sweaters and cuddly pants can actually make you feel warmer than increasing the temperature on your thermostat. There's also something to be said for cuddling up under a warm blanket with a hot beverage of your choice.

Wearing several layers of clothing also works well if the people in your household disagree on the perfect temperature setting. Some may like it warmer than others. Instead of making half the household sweat, it's better to ask the other half to wear an extra layer of clothing.

Go Outside Every Day

Going outside is probably the last thing you want to do when it's freezing. However, going outside even for just a short time can help you reset your temperature tolerance. Have you ever noticed how much nicer a warm, heated house feels after having gone for a walk in the snow? This is no coincidence.

In fact, the same strategy works in the summer. If you feel that it's unbearably hot in your home, then you should go outside where it's actually hot. After being outside in 90-degree heat, you'll probably find 76 degrees in your home nice and cool.

Whether you follow all of this advice isn't really as important as making sure that you feel comfortable. While it's nice to save money on electricity and reduce energy consumption, you should expect the cost for heating in Denver to go up during the winter months. But if your heater is a big energy drain, then you might want to talk to an expert about upgrading it.
