Protect Your Home from Rodents This Winter

Home Improvement
You and your family are ready for winter. You’ve pulled out your stash of winter clothing and unfolded all of your wool socks. Your coats are hanging by the door. While you are preparing to stay warm during the cold weather, so are plenty of other creatures. Rodents are trying to find any place they can to hunker down and stay cozy during the winter months. If you want to keep your home free from critters, there is plenty you can do. From keeping your yard clean to calling a company that does rodent removal in Dunwoody, here are some things you can do to keep pests out:

1. Move your wood pile. A pile of logs is a great place for critters to camp out for the winter. They can easily make a home within the grooves of the wood and stay warm. Once they have done this, it’s much easier for them to gain access to your home, roof, and crawl space. For that reason, you want to keep your wood pile as far from your home as possible. Twenty feet away is the recommended distance, but the further the better. This will ensure mice and other rodents don’t try to make their way indoors.

2. Take the trash out. Even when the weather is cold, don’t get into the habit of leaving bags of trash out on your back porch. This is an open invitation for all critters to eat and make their way in doors. To avoid this, take the time to put full trash bags into garbage cans. This will keep them sealed from outside rodents and protect your home. If possible, try to keep your trash cans away from the house as well, just to be safe.

3. Keep the leaves off of the ground. While it might seem like a nuisance, raking those leaves off of your lawn can actually protect your home from rodents. Leaves provide shelter from the snow and cold weather. The more they build up, the larger the chance rodents will make your home their home. As the leaves fall, be sure to clean them up. It could make a big difference this winter.

4. Inspect your home. Before things get too cold, take a few laps around your home. Look for any holes along your crawl space and attic. These could be access points for critters and rodents. Also, take a look at your roof line. You want to ensure that there are no holes or cracks in your chimney. If you haven’t already, top your chimney with a grate. This will keep any unwanted visitors out. Clear away any tree branches that might allow pests to scurry up them and make their way on to your roof. Ladders, poles, and anything else leaning against the exterior of your home should also be removed.

5. Call in a professional. If you are unsure how to protect your home from critters this winter, call the experts. With their experience, they will be able to show you the necessary measures to ensure your home is only yours, and not shared with rodents. Professionals will also be able to rid your home of any pests that may have already settled in.

Whether you decide to call a company who does rodent removal in Dunwoody or critter-proof your house yourself, it's important to protect your castle. If you don’t, you may find that your abode is much less comfortable with rodents and mice around. Don’t share your house this winter. Instead, make it a sanctuary for those that you love.
