Tips for Solving Common Furnace Problems

Home Improvement
Cold weather is coming and you know you’ll need your furnace to stay comfortable and safe this winter. Your entire family relies on your furnace to be efficient and reliable, and to keep everyone snug and warm while frigid air descends outdoors. If your furnace acts up and you start thinking you need furnace repair in Minneapolis, these troubleshooting tips listed below might help you solve the problem and figure out whether or not you need a furnace repair technician.

No Heat

Nothing is more miserable than watching the snow fall outside when there’s no heat inside. The problem with your furnace, depending on the type you own, could range from a simple thermostat issue to something more serious. First, make sure the thermostat is adjusted to the proper setting for furnace function. Then, take a look at the circuit breaker and, if needed, reset the switch. If your furnace has a motor reset button, press it and see if you finally feel heat. If your furnace runs on gas, check that the pilot light hasn’t gone out.

Not Enough Heat

When you feel only a weak flow of heat coming from your furnace, it’s almost as bad as having no heat at all. You might find an easier solution to this problem, though. Make sure that nothing is blocking your air vents. Are the heating registers open? What is the set temperature on the thermostat? Try raising the thermostat temperature a bit and see if your problem is solved or not. Check the furnace filter and replace or clean it if it’s dirty. You might also have leaks in your HVAC ducts; you can use duct tape to seal those off. Still too little heat? You should have a professional furnace technician inspect your furnace blower.

No Air

What if the furnace is running but no air comes out? This could be a problem with the belts that connects the blower with the furnace motor. You may be able to handle this repair yourself. Find the number stamped on the old belt and get a replacement for it from your home center. If you’d rather have a furnace technician handle this task, give your repair company a call. Another problem occurs when the blower never stops running. First, make sure that the fan switch on the thermostat hasn’t been set to “on” rather than “auto.” If the switch is set properly, you may need to call a service technician for further help.

On and Off

Sometimes the furnace will turn on and off too many times in an hour. This may indicate a problem with your thermostat. If your thermostat has a calibration lever, try setting that a bit longer. If your thermostat is old, you may consider replacing it entirely. A clogged blower or a dirty filter could also be causing this problem. Those parts should be either cleaned or replaced, if needed.

Noises

You may hear noises coming from your heating system, especially from the ducts. Many of these sounds are a result of temperature changes due to the heated air blowing through the ductwork. If the noise bothers you enough, look into having insulated ductwork installed. If you hear squeaking sounds, this may indicate a blower belt that has slipped or is worn out. Should you hear grinding noises from the blower motor, turn the furnace off at once and call your furnace technician.

Old Age

Furnaces won’t run forever. If the heated air coming from your furnace is too dry, if the rooms of your home are heating inconsistently, or if your energy bills are rising sharply, the efficiency of your furnace may be at an end. First, have your service technician inspect the furnace to see if a repair will help take care of these issues. Furnaces that are over 15 to 20 years old, however, will probably need to be replaced with newer and better models. Sometimes, you can solve your furnace problems by yourself. If you experience a more serious problem or would like to discuss other aspects of your furnace’s functioning, give your experienced technician who handles furnace repair in Minneapolis a call.
