Visiting the Sunshine City

Travel & Tourism

Whether you’re in the Sunshine State for a vacation or a business meeting, one thing that’s for certain: you probably won’t need to bring an umbrella, especially if your plans include the city of Sarasota, where on average 251 days per year are filled with sunshine. If you’re flying into the Sarasota–Bradenton International Airport, you can simply take a professional limo in Sarasota from the airport to your destination. However, if it’s a meeting you’re here for, then be sure you don’t spend all of your time in the hotel. You’ll want to enjoy the wonderful weather in the Sunshine State. Once you get out of your transport from the airport you might contemplate a quick visit to one of the white sand beaches Sarasota is so famous for, and that will get you into an immediately relaxed mood.

It really doesn’t matter what time of the year you arrive, but certainly the winter months offer the greatest respite from the more frigid climes throughout the country. In fact, the temperature rarely dips below 50 degrees, and the daytime highs in January often reach 70 degrees. That’s more than just a respite from winter; it’s a downright relief for the soul. Yet, the weather is only one aspect of why you’ll enjoy visiting Sarasota. The city’s motto is Where Urban Amenities Meet Small-Town Living” and amenities indeed are to be found in Sarasota, from the best public golf course in the country to some of the most spectacular beaches to be found anywhere in the world. The city goes all out to accommodate your every need, whether you’re in town to relax or to take care of business.

Playing golf in the middle of winter is always a treat for duffers and scratch golfers alike, and the 45-hole Bobby Jones public course, named for the renowned 1930 Grand Slam winner, is considered by many as the finest public golf course in the country. Jones dedicated the facility in February of 1927, soon after famed course architect Donald Ross designed the original 18 holes in 1925. Over the years, the course has hosted numerous golf immortals as well as celebrities, such as The Babe, George Herman Ruth. Speaking of baseball, Sarasota is also the spring training home of Maryland’s cherished team, the Baltimore Orioles, at Ed Smith Stadium. Throughout the month of March, visitors can catch a game and maybe a home-run ball or an autograph from one of the Baltimore players

Once those meetings are over, there are plenty of great restaurants to take in for dinner, but you certainly don’t want to miss an opportunity to get away during the afternoon to visit the Drum Circle Distillery. The distillery’s Siesta Key spiced rum has won the esteemed Caribbean Journal's Best Spiced Rum award four years in a row and still counting. You’ll find that the city offers its visitors a wide-ranging blend of culture, fine dining, and entertainment that includes circus thrills, pristine white beaches, and a plethora of shopping venues. The Ringlings, the first family of the American circus, are honored at the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art. This is in homage to the fact that in 1911, John and his wife purchased 20 acres of Sarasota property and spent many years wintering in the city and becoming active in the community.

One of the finest shopping experiences anywhere can be found in many of Sarasota’s malls, such as the St. Armand's Circle close to the shore on Lido Key, as well as in its downtown district. Most importantly, before you take that professional limo in Sarasota back to the airport, you won’t want to miss spending time on any number of Sarasota’s world famous, white sand beaches. There are many of them, but if you can just visit one, then Siesta Key is where you will want to plop down your beach towel. As you can see, the city offers vacationers and business people alike a great experience.
