As in many urban centers such as our nation’s capital, shopping typically means neighborhoods rather than stores. If Georgetown happens to be that neighborhood, there are a few options within the neighborhood to find the best shopping in Georgetown. Explore a few of these possibilities and you most certainly won’t be disappointed. Three areas, in particular, come to mind clustered near the neighborhood’s primary commercial and retail district at the intersection of Wisconsin Avenue and M Street: Wisconsin Avenue north of M Street, The Shops at Georgetown Park, and M Street east of Wisconsin Avenue. Wisconsin Avenue One of the primary commercial corridors of the Georgetown neighborhood lies at the intersection of Wisconsin Avenue and M Street, where visitors will find numerous high-end shops, bars, and restaurants on Wisconsin Avenue north of M Street. Following Wisconsin Avenue north for over a half mile to Book Hill Park at Reservoir Road, many of the high-end brand name retailers, as well as a bevy of local merchants, can be found along the street. Major retailers such as Abercrombie and Fitch, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, and the Apple Store are located closer to M Street while numerous local retailers and restaurants span block after block going further north to Reservoir Road. The Shops at Georgetown Park Parts of the structure that now house this shopping center have a long and interesting history, beginning back in 1838 when it was used as a tobacco warehouse, following in the 1850s when it was converted into stables for the first horsecar line, the Washington and Georgetown Railroad, and then later converted into a machine shop for streetcars. In 1975, the historic site was acquired to be developed into a combined shopping and housing complex, which it is today. The Canal House was opened in 1980 as the first phase of the project; however, in the intervening years the site was the subject of various lawsuits and an eventual foreclosure. It was purchased out of the foreclosure in 2010 and a major renovation ensued, which gave the mall a classic and upscale appearance. Major high-end retailers, such as Banana Republic, Anthropologie, Dean & DeLuca, H&M, HomeGoods, and J. Crew along with discount retailers such as T.J. Maxx, and DSW are located in The Shops at Georgetown Park. Then, after a long day of shopping, one can relax in the actual Georgetown Waterfront Park just a block away along the scenic Potomac River. M Street There are also some great local shops that run for a few blocks off the beaten path, so to speak, along M Street, east of Wisconsin Avenue, where one can find Barneys New York, Nike Georgetown, and Kate Spade New York as well as a wonderful collection of local retailers and eateries. From there one can wander just a few yards south of M Street along Wisconsin Avenue to the Spice and Tea Exchange, where one can certainly whet their appetite. After that, one’s hunger can be satisfied by heading over to Blues Alley, which runs parallel and just south of M Street, and where one can end the day at the famous Blues Alley Jazz and Supper Club. This Georgetown institution features great music and great food. The club is open nightly and offers the best in music including no less than jazz greats such as Nancy Wilson, Tony Bennett, Lou Rawls, and Wynton Marsalis. Though it was not mentioned here, one would be remiss not to drop by Washington Harbour and the wonderful restaurants that populate this beautiful waterfront complex that runs along the Potomac just south of the Wisconsin Avenue and M Street intersections. After a long day of shopping, this should be on anyone’s list but particularly if one is already in the neighborhood. As you can see, some of the best shopping in Georgetown is found in clusters.
