When building a walkway you want to make sure that it is done the correct way so there are no problems in the future with it such as cracking or becoming uneven as the ground settles. It is a job a homeowner could do but it is best if you have a walkway contractor to do the job. One reason to hire a contractor is that each walkway has a special way to be installed. For example if you are having a flagstone walkway built it has different materials, precautions, and steps than a brick walkway would. Experienced walkway builders would know all this information to ensure that your walkway is done correctly. If you have a garden you want the walkway to go to or you want a rustic look for the front yard you should have a flagstone walkway installed. With this type of walkway you want to make sure that the contractor is using stones that are wide enough for two people to walk together on the walkway comfortably. If you have a small front yard then it would need to be wide enough for one person. The walkway contractor should inspect the flagstone carefully before he purchases it to ensure that he gets sturdy pieces without any large or small cracks and they are the appropriate size. The walkway builder will make sure that the walkway will be built on a base that is well constructed. If there is not a good base to install the walkway on it could lead to future issues like cracking or heaving. An inadequate base can also lead to drainage issues. Before the walkway contractor can start laying the stones or bricks for the walkway he has to make sure that the base is built from a combination of cinders or crushed stone and sand. It all has to be compacted down until it is flat. If you are using brick the builder will make sure that they are placed together as tightly as he can get them. If there are any gaps they will be filled in by putting sand on top of the bricks and then use a broom to sweep the sand into the gaps. They may also use a hose to help the sand settle down and not blow away. When you have a walkway installed you should also consider lighting along the walkway so no one will accidentally step off the walk and hurt themselves. The lighting can be installed on the front porch using a flood light that is well placed and lights up the walkway. This floodlight does not look very appealing visually so many choose to use lighting along the pathway in the form of solar powered lights.
