When your car collides with someone else’s, it can be difficult to know what to do. From taking pictures to contacting a Sarasota car accident lawyer, here are a few of things you should do after an accident: - Don’t leave the scene. After the initial collision, the worst thing that you can do is to flee the scene. It’s illegal and could end up haunting you later down the line. Instead, if you are able to, pull your car over to a safe spot. Check to make sure that everyone in your car is safe and uninjured. Then, check on the passengers in the other car.
- Call the police. No matter how major or minor the accident might be, always call the police. They will come to the scene of the accident and take statements from both drivers. This is beneficial for insurance and legal purposes. It allows both drivers to give an account of exactly what they saw happen while it’s still fresh in your minds. The officers will also take the statements of any witnesses present during the collision as well.
- Take pictures. After the accident, use a camera or your cell phone to take as many pictures as possible. Snap photos of both cars, street signs, and damage that has occurred. It’s best to do this before any cars have been moved. It will paint a clearer picture of what happened during the accident and can be referred back to if necessary for legal and insurance purposes.
- Exchange information. Be sure to get the insurance information and personal information of the other driver. It’s also important that you give them your information as well. While you might not be dealing with each other directly during the process following the collision, it’s best to have all of the information possible just in case.
- Call an attorney. Depending on the situation, you may need to hire an attorney. If you are suing the other driver or if they are suing you, the legal battle could be intense. Hiring a lawyer will improve your chances of winning the case.
By following these steps, you can ensure that whatever happens after the collision goes smoothly. If you’ve been involved in an accident and have questions, contact a Sarasota car accident lawyer before proceeding. It could make all the difference.
