You're contentedly cooking in your kitchen and open the pantry to retrieve the pasta you need to make dinner. Suddenly, a streak of brown fur darts past your feet and quickly disappears underneath the refrigerator. You know right away that you have a rodent problem, but what kind of rodent problem is it? Was that a rat or a mouse that gave you such a scare? Many of our clients have a hard time identifying the differences between rats and mice, so we've provided this helpful guide to help you figure out which pest has invaded your home. Whichever it is, you can always give us a call for professional mouse or rat removal in Atlanta. Size The most obvious difference between rats and mice is their size. Rats are much larger, growing as long as 40 centimeters and sometimes more. They are also more thickly built and weigh more than mice. Mice, on the other hand, only grow about 12 to 20 centimeters in length and weigh between 12 and 30 grams. Ears and Nose If you are able to look your rodent home invader in the face, you may be able to distinguish what it is by a few distinct facial characteristics. The first is the shape of the nose. Rats have more of a blunt snout, while the snouts of mice are triangular. Their ears are also different; mice ears tend to be larger in relation to their head size and may even be a bit floppy. Tail If you catch a glimpse of the animal's tail as it disappears beneath your furniture, you can identify the rodent in that way. Mice have long, thin, hairy tails. While rats' tails are also long, they're usually thicker than a mouse's tail and are typically hairless. There may even be a slightly scaly appearance to the skin, if you're able to get a good look at it. Their "Gifts" Sometimes, it can be difficult to get a look at the rodent that has moved into your home. Both rats and mice are nocturnal creatures, and they tend to avoid contact with humans whenever possible. However, you may be able to determine what you have in your home by the "gifts" they leave behind. Mice leave as many as many as 40 to 100 small droppings in a day. Rat droppings are larger and less frequent, producing only 20 to 50 droppings a day. Rats can also leave grease marks from their fur on the surfaces they touch. Knowing whether you have a mouse or rat in your home can be helpful if you're trying to get rid of the critter yourself. But no matter what it is, you can give us a call. We specialize in both mouse and rat removal in Atlanta.
