The old rule was that you couldn’t mix patterns. Thankfully, the interior decorators of today are much more lax on these types of rules. This is great news because, after all, your interior should reflect your own personal style. That said, if you’re going to mix patterns there are a few tips that can help ensure you do it successfully. 1. Use at least three different patterns Odd numbers work best but at least three different patterns should be your goal. Mix the scale and include both small and large patterns. The largest pattern will make the strongest statement and the other patterns will simply complement it. 2. Stick to the same intensity While mixing colors is fine, you don’t want to mix vibrant colors with pastels or primary colors with muted tones. Great options include things like large floral patterns with small floral patterns, striped curtains with a checked blanket. 3. Understand the importance of how a fabric feels As you’re comparing how colors and patterns go together, don’t forget that the feel of a fabric can be important. For example, velvet curtains feel very different than sheer curtains. 4. Seek balance Don’t place all your patterned items on one side of the room together. You want to distribute both solids and patterns all throughout the room. Remember that architectural elements of your room, like windows and fireplaces, should be considered a part of the overall decoration. 5. Your whites should match Though you can get away with using different shades of blues or reds, it’s hard to pull of different shades of white. An off white with a pearl white will just look like you didn’t realize they didn’t match. If you’re going to use white, stick to one tone. 6. Think about how you want the room to feel Some people want their living room to be a calm, soothing place. If that’s you, then you should stick to fewer patterns and try to keep them large and calmer. On the other hand, some want their living room to be the center of activity and to bring excitement to the home. If that’s you, then you can get away with more, busier patterns. These are just six tips to help you mix and match in your living room.
