Spinning Your Way to Fitness

Spinning, also known as studio cycling, is an excellent full body workout performed in classes that typically consist of 6 to 20 or so participants, all of whom are seated on modified stationary bikes led by an instructor who takes the class on a “ride” that includes a mix of sprints, hills, intervals, and circuits. Though spin classes are often 45 to 50 minutes long, some can be a bit shorter or even longer, but all are almost always set to music.

Spin bikes are equipped with a special flywheel that will pick up speed as the rider pedals, a tension knob to make pedaling easier or harder, and seats and handlebars that are adjustable so that it simulates riding a traditional road bike. Though one could accomplish similar training on their own bike on the open road, spinning provides the motivation of others that comes with attending any number of spin classes in Providence.

The advantages of spinning are numerous, but here’s just a sampling.

1. Burn, Baby, Burn!

You can burn 400 to 600 calories depending on the intensity and length of the ride or about 7 to 14 calories per minute.

2. Pace Yourself, Not Others.

If you prefer to pedal slower than the rest, you’re not going to fall behind and no one is aware of the others’ progress.

3. Find the Music In You.

You’ll get lost in the music. Research shows that athletes work out harder when listening to music at a fast beat.

4. It’s A Full-Body Workout.

Pedaling strengthens the heart, glutes, thighs, and calves. Use of weights and resistance bands gives a total-body burn.

5. Take It Fast or Slow.

Spinning can be performed as an anaerobic or aerobic exercise for the heart, and classes typically include both.

6. Low Impact, Yet Effective.

Spinning takes the pounding off your knees and feet, making it good for rehabilitation or for those with arthritis.

7. Hot Legs and All!

You’ll sculpt and tone the muscles in your legs and not bulk them up.

8. 6-Pack Abs!

Moving from a slightly bent position and side to side works the central and traverse abdominal muscles.

9. Fun, Fun, Fun.  

Riding together you’ll feed off others’ energy especially when you begin to fatigue and thinking you might want to quit.

10. It’s All In Your Head

Pushing through the hard elements of the workout develops self-discipline, self-control, and helps to build confidence.
