- Turkey's military says it has seized control of the country to protect democracy and maintain human rights
- The military has declared martial law and curfew
- Airports are closed, flights canceled, social media slowed down
- President Recep Tayyip Erdogan appeared on FaceTime, called on Turkish people to fill the streets to support the civilian government
- Erdogan called coup leaders a small faction within the military, said they will fail and pay "very heavy price"
- Thousands heeded Erdogan's call to defy curfew and take to the streets
- Gunfire, explosions heard in Ankara, Istanbul, casualties reported
- Media reports Turkish figher jet shoots down helicopter used by coup plotters

- US Secretary of State John Kerry urges Turks to preserve peace, stability, and "continuity"
- NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg says in statement he has spoken to Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu; is calling for "calm and restraint, and full respect for Turkey's democratic institutions and its constitution. Turkey is a valued NATO ally."
