These are professional attorneys that are hired to defend both corporations and individuals, who are referred to as defendants in a legal setting. They are generally arrested as a suspect for unlawful activities and are referred to as the defendant. Criminal defense attorneys are also known as a criminal lawyer or defense attorney. They are the attorneys that are responsible for represent people in court who have been accused of criminal activities. In court it will be the jury and judge who will decide if the defendant is innocent or guilty.
Criminal defense attorneys need to have good knowledge of how the court system works and about the law. When hired they will be appointed by the court if the defendant cannot afford an attorney or the defendant will hire them on their own. Good criminal defense attorneys can be expensive. Some charge as much as three hundred dollars an hour plus other fees that are applicable.
When hired they will work with the defendant to help develop the best way to minimize the consequences of any unlawful act they may have been involved in. If the defendant is innocent the attorneys will work hard to prove this fact in court. The attorney also has the job of giving their client a reality check. This is especially true if they have the misconception and believes that there will be no consequences for committing a serious crime. It is also the job of a lawyer to try to negotiate a deal with the prosecutors to help reduce any jail time or fees that their client may be facing. In family or juvenile court cases, a lawyer may help to customize the sentence for their client to help keep them out of trouble in the future.
Criminal defense attorneys will know the ins and outs of the local court circuit and should have the knowledge of which tactics will work for which judge when they are trying to get the case thrown out of court or having the sentence that their client is facing reduced. They will also know who has the power to settle cases out the courtroom and how to find little-known laws that could help their client. A criminal defense attorney should be able to use any means necessary that are lawful to prove their client is less guilty or innocent of the crimes they are charged with.
