Let All Your Things Have Their Places

Home Improvement

One of Benjamin Franklin’s 13 virtues was “order,” to which he said “Let all your Things have their Places. Let each part of your Business have its Time.” From that, we have derived the famous quote often attributed to him, which is “a place for everything and everything in its place.” When it comes to designing a custom closet, nothing could be truer, so it certainly pays to work with an expert who designs custom closets in Cumming to achieve that goal. There are some key things to consider, however, when maximizing space in any closet, so keep these in mind as you visualize your space.

Divide and Conquer

Divide your closet by placing a hutch in the middle to create two clearly defined spaces in which you can put your casual clothes on one side and your business attire on the other side.

Top to Bottom

Most closets waste vertical space, which could otherwise be maximized by utilizing strategically placed double hanging rods that will keep similar items together and also allow for the addition of features like a belt rack or hideaway tie bar.

Go Deep

Include deep drawers in your closet so that you can minimize furniture in your bedroom to open more space to relax and also allow you to keep items you need close by in the closet.

Go Flat

Create a flat catchall surface on top of the hutch for those things you first take off at night and then first put on in the morning, such as your keys, a wallet, rings, and other bling.

Inch by Inch

Be sure to go floor to ceiling by including a top shelf in your closet system as well as a number of individual shelves that will assure you have a place for every item.

Plan, Plan, Plan

  • Envision It: Think through how you will utilize the space and whether you want it to be an area to simplify the process of selecting your wardrobe, make it easy to prepare for the coming day, or even create your personal man or woman cave.
  • Sketch It: Take measurements from top to bottom and back to front of your closet, being sure to consider any unusual angles as well as any obstacles, such as an outlet, a light switch, a window, or any other impediment.
  • Divvy It: If the closet is for you and your partner, you need to determine how to divide up the space between the two of you as well as determine how much space to allocate to casual versus business attire.
  • Hang It: Remember to account for short height items, such as shirts and blouses, versus long items, such as pants and dresses, by using vertical space to your advantage with two or three rods instead of just one.
  • Fold It: On the other hand, if your wardrobe includes mostly folded clothing, consider options such as open shelving units that make it easy to see everything, as well as drawers to create a dresser inside your closet.

Be sure to keep these key things in mind and plan first before hiring someone who designs custom closets in Cumming.
