6 Signs of Termite Infestation

Home Improvement

Termites are every homeowner’s worst nightmare. These tiny little insects live within the walls and foundations of homes and feast on the wood present there. Over time, they can compromise the integrity of your home and cause major structural damage. Catching a termite infestation is absolutely imperative to limiting the damage and getting rid of them quickly. To ensure that your home doesn’t fall under the siege of these pests, here are a few things to look out for. If you notice any of these telltale signs, it’s time to call the pest control experts. These highly trained professionals offer various termite control methods in Macon, GA, to combat any of the following signs.

  • Hollowed wood. You normally won’t notice any damage done to the surface of wood if you have termites. This is because termites prefer the dark, burrowing deep inside wood and creating tiny tunnels. If you tap a wooden beam in your home and hear a hollow noise, it could be that termites have eaten away the inside.
  • Groups of wings. Termites are experts at relocation. Reproductive termites, also known as swarmers, are winged and fly from place to place in search of new areas to inhabit. They shed their wings frequently as they mature and develop. If you see tiny insect wings around your home, you could have an infestation on your hands.
  • Distorted painted surfaces. When termites enter a wooden surface, they can literally eat it from the inside out. Often times this causes the painted exterior to crack or appear distorted. It’s a good idea to inspect and seal any cracks around your roof, vents, windows, and siding to ensure that termites don’t have an access point.
  • Mud tubes. Many times, termites build tunnels on the surface of their colony. This allows them to have access to moisture while they burrow and search for food. If you notice small tubes around the foundation of your home, call a professional immediately to have things inspected.
  • Termite droppings. Termite droppings are called frass. These wood-colored pellets can often be found in gutters, downspouts, crawl spaces, and insulation. If you notice them, it’s a sure sign that dry wood termites have made a home in your walls.
  • Live termites. Termites are usually between ¼ and ½ of an inch in length. Some have wings, but all are either black or brown in color. In rare cases, you may actually see termites in your home. This usually means that the infestation is advanced. Calling for help is your best bet at extermination.

Whether you are in the middle of construction on your home or are simply performing an inspection, any signs of termites should be taken seriously. Not only can these tiny bugs destroy your investment, they can pose major health issues for you and your family. As soon as you notice any of these signs, call a professional to have things inspected. Pest control experts offer various termite control methods in Macon, GA, to ensure that the structure of your home remains stable and its integrity intact.
