A custom kitchen isn't complete without functional and organized drawers. Most of our kitchen designs have very few doors on the lower cabinets. Rollouts behind doors seem to be a thing of the past except for inside pantry cabinets. We can make drawers very large and deep with high capacity capabilities and add amenities that provide maximum functionality, such as peg systems for plates, tray dividers for cookie sheets, utensil trays, etc. Before adding any organizational feature that you might desire, it is important to pick the right type of drawer box for you. There are three material types of drawer boxes that we provide here at Turn Key Remodel: melamine, plywood, and solid hardwood. Melamine is a nice material for ease of maintenance since it is a vinyl-coated particleboard. We typically glue and use a pocket screw construction to assemble these drawer boxes. Our recommended drawer guide is a side-mounted full extension guide. I have seen the undermount soft-closed type used with melamine, but do not recommend it with the particleboard composition. Plywood is our standard drawer box material. We use a clear coated, ½" 9-ply birch specifically designed for drawer box construction. We typically glue and screw to assemble; however, a dovetail joint can be utilized as a cosmetic feature. Dovetail joints are currently very popular and are found in most prefabricated cabinets. Since these cabinets are mass-produced, they can keep the cost down - especially coming from China. For a custom cabinet shop, the dovetail joints are costlier to incorporate, but we do provide the option. Any type of drawer guide can be used with this material and I recommend the Blum under-mount guides with the soft-close feature. Solid hardwood drawer boxes are the most expensive option since the material is more costly and dovetail joints are required. Clear coated maple is the most commonly used material; however we can use any hardwood species and stain them any in any color. Any type of drawer guide can be used with this material and once again I recommend the Blum under-mount guides with the soft-close feature. For extremely large or high capacity drawers, it is my recommendation to use a heavy-duty, side-mounted, full extension drawer guide with a load rating to exceed the estimated gross weight. We also use a thicker drawer bottom on the oversized drawers typically used for pots and pans. There are many ways that we can retrofit existing drawers as well. We can change the guides utilizing existing drawer boxes or even replacing the box and re-installing the existing drawer front to the new box. We typically do this on our cabinet re-finishing projects. It is also common to convert cabinets with doors to drawers and either match the existing drawer fronts or do a complete change out when refacing the cabinetry. Rollouts are a less expensive option that provides convenience, but they are not as space efficient as the drawers.
