There's a lot more to Las Vegas than the casinos and shows of the Strip. A person could come to Sin City for a week and never leave the Strip (or the air conditioned casinos), but they'd miss out on so much that the largest city in the Silver State has to offer. If you want to really explore Nevada and what makes this state special, get in the car and check out some of these destinations. Red Rock Canyon You're absolutely going to need a rental car in Las Vegas to get yourself here, but it's worth it. Red Rock Canyon offers some of the most picturesque views anywhere in the nation, and the formation is ideal for a strenuous but rewarding hiking trip. The canyon features 19 different hiking trails and offers the chance to see some of the vegetation and wildlife of the Silver State while enjoying the majestic views of the rock formation. It's a great place to set up camp for the night and experience the spirit of the West, and if you really want to do some exploring from the car, the canyon features a 13-mile scenic drive that will give you some of the most memorable views you'll ever see. Hoover Dam This architectural marvel has been around since 1936 and straddles the border between Nevada and Arizona. It's just over a half hour away from Las Vegas, so it's a very reasonable drive. Here, you can get an up-close look at one of the United States' most important structures and even take a tour of the facility. The tour provides some impressive views of both the dam and the Colorado River below, so it's a great opportunity to make some memories and take plenty of pictures. Lake Mead What's better than seeing the Hoover Dam? How about exploring the reservoir that it created? Lake Mead is the largest reservoir in the United States in terms of capacity and offers fishing, swimming, water skiing, and other great aquatic activities. If you're looking to really have some fun and get some exercise, it's hard to do better than a Lake Mead trip. Las Vegas is well known for what the Strip offers, but having a rental car in Las Vegas opens the door to an entire world beyond it. If you're up for an adventure and want to really get to know the Silver State, a rental car is the way to see it all on your terms.
