Hotels have always offered their share of unreasonable fees - such as exorbitant taxes and the fees they can charge for their phones or use of the minibar. The list can in fact become endless when you consider where and how they can add more and more costing on to your stay overall. |
The Most Common Fees include:
Airport transfers: Before you assume that the shuttle from the airport to your hotel is free, be sure to ask; some hotels are starting to charge a fee for this usually complimentary service.
Gratuities: Sometimes called a service charge or hotel service fee, this expense may be charged per day or per stay, and it covers gratuities for bellhops and housekeeping staff. Look out for this charge particularly if you're traveling with a convention or large group.
Bottled water and snacks: Think twice before touching that "complimentary" bottle of water that the hotel has left on your desk. It could cost you upwards of £5. Ditto for fruit plates, cookies or other munchies. If in doubt, call down to the front desk before indulging. Be even more curious if there's no info as to what the charges for the food and drinks in the room may be; just never ever assume that this is going to be free.
Cancellation: Before assuming that you can cancel your hotel reservation a day or two before you arrive, read your hotel's cancellation policy carefully. You may be penalized the price of a night's stay (or more).
Checking in and out: Got into the airport early or have a late flight? Some hotels will charge you a fee for checking in early or checking out late.
Look out for these hotel charges and look out for this as you check out and query anything other than the above. Get an itemised billing and get a break down of what it is you are paying for and ensure this meets your expected levels of requirement in terms of what you thought you were going to pay for when you made the booking to the hotel overall. Just remember, that when a hotel can, they will always try and make extra money here and there on your and your booking.
