Putting the Budget into the Honeymoon

Relationships

When considering honeymoon packages near Atlanta, GA, consider that most of these accommodations are simply a resort’s romance package wrapped up with a few extras specific to newlyweds. That doesn’t mean you should shun these packages, but you also shouldn’t limit yourself to getaways that are labelled with the term honeymoon or even the word romance. Ideally, you should ponder all of your options and focus first and foremost on location and then find a resort that will put together a vacation worthy of a honeymoon. Certainly, the Atlanta area has its share of world-class hotels and resorts that would be ideal for a newlywed escape, such as Callaway Gardens. Wherever that final decision takes you, think about these two tips in your planning.

Getting What You Pay For

As you may know by now, putting the word "wedding" in front of any item, such as "wedding dress" or "wedding shoes," immediately inflates the price. This is also applicable to those honeymoon packages, since a dreamy getaway worthy of a honeymoon doesn’t have to be labelled “honeymoon.”  A regular vacation package can very well provide exactly what’s needed without the added "honeymoon tax." If you do go this route, when you check in let them know that you’re a honeymoon couple and if they don’t offer it, ask for an upgrade. Better yet, if you call the front desk instead of an 800 number, not only are you likely to get someone who can offer discounts but, if you have them indicate in your reservation that you’re honeymooners, you may find that you’ll be offered perks like a bottle of champagne without having to pay for it. Remember that packages that hotels and resorts offer are not always a bargain, so be sure to examine the components and price them out a la carte to compare costs. You might be pleasantly surprised to find that turning down the fruit baskets, flowers, and bottle of champagne in exchange for putting together your own package will end up costing you much less—leaving you plenty of spare cash for a better bottle of champagne! Finally, don’t hesitate to spend a little extra where it makes sense to do so and go ahead and pay extra for that room with a view or amenities such as a hot tub or private balcony. After all, this is your honeymoon!

Timing Really Is Everything

If your wedding falls within dates that hotels typically offer seasonal specials, you can save a substantial amount of money, but remember that the ideal time to book the honeymoon is when you’re planning the wedding—at least six to eight months in advance, if not more. Don’t wait for fares to drop, since fares typically go up as inventory of seats sell out and you also risk not getting the hotel rooms or rates that you want. Try to avoid holidays since nothing jacks up costs more than Christmas or spring break travel. If you want a spring wedding and honeymoon, be sure to avoid Easter and spring breaks, and if a winter event is your preference, then stay away from Thanksgiving and Christmas time travel. Localities are important to consider as well, since travel to any popular wine country resort during the harvest season, or New England destination during peak fall color season, will inevitably increase the cost of your trip. The day of the week that you travel will certainly impact your airfare. Since most couples marry on a weekend, you’re going to find that if you want to leave directly after the reception that fares are often more expensive on a Sunday than on a Tuesday. Sure, it might be fun to float straight to the airport from the reception, but it’s better to give yourself time to rest and catch your collective breaths between the ceremony and the honeymoon. Leaving, as well as returning, on a Monday or Tuesday not only allows for that but also offers an opportunity to get the best rates for your flights.

Consider these tips whether you plan your honeymoon package near Atlanta, GA, or any other romantic destination.
