Once you have researched the options, done your homework, gotten your consultation, and decided that laser hair removal in NYC is the way to go, you need to prepare your skin and hair for the treatments. Laser hair removal is the best way to enjoy long-term hair removal, avoid razor burn and ingrown hairs, and enjoy smooth and beautiful skin. Try these tips and tricks for getting the most from your treatments, enjoying the best results, and being prepared for your appointments.

Schedule Ahead of Time

Laser hair removal is most effective if your treatments occur every 4 to 6 weeks. This targets the hair follicles in their various stages of growth, damaging them so they don’t grow back. Clinics and spas often get busy, so if you try to schedule your appointments at the last minute, you might not be able to get an opening in time. To maximize results, schedule your appointments as far ahead of time as possible in order to get the timing just right.

Avoid Waxing and Plucking

Laser hair removal treatments target the hair follicles or roots, damaging them so that the hair doesn’t grow back. In order to leave the hair follicle intact, you must avoid waxing, plucking, or otherwise ripping the hair out by the root for the duration of your treatments. Shaving and surface creams are fine, since they don’t affect the follicle of the hair.

Shave the Night Before

The night before your appointment, thoroughly shave the area. The laser targets the follicle beneath the skin using the melanin, or coloring, of the hair. If you don’t shave the hair away, or if a few long strays get missed, the laser will target the color in those hair, burning and even scarring the surface of the skin. On the other hand, if you shave immediately before the appointment, it leaves less pigment for the laser to target.

Avoid the Pain

While some people don’t find the laser treatments to be painful, other people don’t enjoy the discomfort. You can look into numbing creams and other options, or you can take an over-the-counter pain reliever an hour before your appointment. Some people find that applying ice to the area before treatments effectively numbs the pain.

Clean Your Skin

Immediately before getting your laser hair removal in NYC, clear your skin of any cosmetics, lotions, or deodorants. Once your appointment is completed, avoid vigorous exercise and raising your temperature, since this can cause scarring of the treated areas.
