3 Things to Consider Before Air Conditioner Installation |

Upgrading or adding an HVAC system to a house is a major project and a huge investment. Once the unit is installed, it is another significant expense to change. Before the air conditioner installation, Watkinsville homeowners should make sure they have chosen the right system for their house and their needs. That way they can have a comfortable home for many years. These are the 3 biggest factors affecting which unit to get. What Size Unit Often times, homeowners think the unit they had was just fine, so they replace it with a unit that is the same size. But, that may be why the old unit failed. Each unit is sized based on several factors; house size, age, efficiency, window size and placement. Older homes with smaller windows or newer energy efficient homes may not need as big of a unit because it will be easier to keep the house cool. Trees shading the house can also help keep the house cool in the summer. In the winter, a fireplace and the stove can supplement the heater, allowing it to work less. Even a two story house has special considerations that a single story does not. Since heat rises, the upper floor is usually warmer in both summer and winter. That is why many multi-level homes will have two smaller units. The proper size unit will not have to work as hard and save lots of money in energy costs. And, a unit that does not have to work as hard will last longer than a unit that struggles to keep up. Energy Efficiency In conjunction with the correct size, homeowners can upgrade their system to a newer, energy efficient model. The SEER certification on an air conditioning systems rates how efficient the unit is during the summer months when cooling the house. A higher number indicates a more energy efficient model. Older units manufactured before 1980 had at best a rating of 6. The minimum rating for today’s models is 13 with the average efficiency around 17. There are even some units with an efficiency rating over 20, but these units have a higher price tag. Units with higher efficiency cost more to manufacture and will have a higher initial cost. But, they more than compensate over the life of the unit with significantly lower energy costs. A HVAC contractor can create a spreadsheet showing the different costs for several different models to highlight how much each will cost. Matching Equipment Many homes will have a split air conditioner, with half of the unit inside the house and half outside. Each half needs to work smoothly with the other half because the unit is sized as a whole. If the two halves are different sizes, they will not work as efficiently and use more energy. But, there are other equipment concerns when adding or replacing a unit. If the home has never had an air conditioner or only had window units, ducts will have to be added to the home. Smaller, ductless systems can also be used if there are no ducts or to augment a new addition. Before deciding on air conditioner installation, Watkinsville homeowners should consider these factors. Taking some time and finding the right unit for their house can lower energy bills, prevent repairs and prolong the life of the unit. This can save lots of money in the long run.
