If the fluid is low, just top it off and test the transmission again to see if that was the problem. If that doesn't help, move on to the next step. Check for Leaks If you know the transmission fluid is at the proper level but the transmission still isn't functioning properly, you may want to check for leaks. The transmission is a closed system, but there are several places that could be leaking. Check the following locations: - The filler tube base
- The drain hole underneath the transmission
- Between the transmission and the engine
- The selector shaft
- The speed sensor mounting point
- The radiator
