Is your truck ready for winter? While much of the country is enjoying the beautiful autumn days and getting ready for Thanksgiving, this is actually the perfect time to prep your truck for the new season. Before you know it, there will be snow on the roads, and you’ll be busy looking for a Christmas tree. Take care of these seven things to make sure your truck is up and ready for the challenge: 1. Ensure Traction Tires play an essential role in having a pleasant experience on the roads during the cold season. You need to check your tires’ condition and keep them properly inflated at all times. Keep in mind that the tread thickness should always stick to a minimum of 5/32 inches. Prepare those tire chains and try to have them with you wherever you go throughout the whole season. 2. Check the Battery If there is anything that you do not want it is for your battery to give up on you when you most need it. With cold weather putting such high pressure on your battery, you want to commit to constantly testing it and cleaning the connections. 3. Check and Maintain the Engine Make sure you always keep your engine in proper functioning mode or else be ready for the consequences. Always check the glow plug operation in diesel engines and make sure all the belts and hoses are in good condition. You should also be mindful of checking the engine heaters, be it the oil pan or the block heaters. 4. Coolant Maintenance Your coolant is designed to last just 24 months, so whatever goes past that needs to be changed. Flush the whole system and replace the coolant to keep its properties up and running high. 5. Get the Right Fuel If temperatures seem to be getting below 10 degrees Fahrenheit, you need to know what the right fuel for your truck is. When it comes to diesel engine models, your truck will need an ASTM D-975 Grade 1 diesel to function properly. Don’t forget to keep your fuel filter clean and the water separator drained. 6. Examine the Windshield Wiper Blades The wiper blades usually get dry during the hot summer months. You’ll need yours to work well, especially if you live in a snowy climate. Examine your windshield wiper blades and replace them with winter blades, which tend to be thicker and sturdier. 7. Take Care of the Important Details In other maintenance, you need to check your heater/defroster to ensure effective defrosting. Make sure the heating system works properly and pack up a basic winter kit for your truck: jumper cables, a flashlight, a shovel, a first aid kit, basic car tools, road flares, reflective triangles, a blanket and extra thermal clothes.
