The Hidden Treasures of Marrakesh in Morocco

Travel & Tourism
Marrakesh is the third largest city in the Moroccan Kingdom in terms of population density. The population of the city was estimated to be around one million inhabitants in 2014. The city is also one of the most remarkable touristic destinations commonly added to many tours to Morocco.

Marrakesh is located around 327 kilometers to the West of Rabat, the capital of Morocco, 580 kilometers to the South West of Tangier, and 196 kilometers to the South West of Casablanca. Established in the 11th century AD, Marrakesh has a long rich history and many impressive monuments visited by many travelers who tour Morocco. The Almoravid Dynasty established Marrakesh in 1070 AD to be the capital of their kingdom and they made it an important commercial and cultural center.

Many travel packages to Morocco which include a visit to Marrakesh usually focus on two or three monuments including the Koutobeya Mosque, the Saadis Tombs, and the famous Gamea' El Fna Square. Although these places are quite remarkable, there are many other attractions in Marrakesh that deserve to be explored by travelers.

The Ben Yusuf Madrassa

Built by the Marinid Dynasty in the middle of the 14th century, it was actually renovated by the Saadi Dynasty in 1565; the Ben Yusuf Islamic teaching school is one of the largest and most impressive in Morocco. The school or Madrassa is featured with its marvelous tiles' decorations. it is considered one of the most wonderful examples of such constructions in Morocco.

The Museum of Marrakesh

The Museum of Marrakesh has a significant location situated near the Ibn Yusuf Madrassa and the Game' El Fna Square. The building of the museum itself is quite remarkable. It was originally a palace that was built at the end of the 19th century before being transformed into a museum for the city in 1997.

The museum of Marrakesh is featured for displaying a large collection of exhibits including contemporary art portraits, ancient coins, historical books, traditional Moroccan pottery, and many more interesting collections. Many of the tourists who travel to Morocco would sometimes like to visit the different museums of the country.

The Almoravid Dome

Credited with the mission of establishing the city of Marrakesh, Almoravid constructed many notable Islamic structures in the city. The most ancient historical site in the city today is in fact the Almoravid Dome. Constructed in the beginning of the 12th century AD by Sultan Yusuf, the structure was actually established as an ablution area for the worshipers who are going to pray in the Yusuf Mosque.

The Dome is located at the ceiling of a large Sahn, open courtyard with 19 private places for ablution. The dome is 12 meters in height with a rectangle shaped dome that is 12 meters in length and 7 meters in width. The dome is one of the most impressive Almoravid monuments to be explored by travelers who spend their vacations in Morocco.

T he Majorelle Gardens

The Majorelle Garden is actually one of the most entertaining places to visit by tourists from all ages that travel to Morocco. First Established in 1924 by Jack Majorelle, famous French artists who painted the buildings of the garden by a distinctive shade of the blue color in 1937 in a bold move that surprised the inhabitants of the red city of the time.

An important landmark in the history of the Majorelle Garden was when the famous French designer, Yves Saint Laurent, and author, Pierre Pergy, bought the garden and specified a section inside it for public visits. Today, the garden is one of the most popular touristic places in Marrakesh. The buildings that surround the garden became a museum for Islamic art. The garden itself is featured with the rare types of plants and trees that were imported from every region in the world.
