Cigars are popular among tobacco enthusiasts and make great gifts. Have you ever wondered what some of the most historic figures of the modern age smoked? Are you smoking a historical favorite? Before you go shopping for cigars or the best tobacco pipes in Westminster, check out this list of famous figures and their favorite brands. Winston Churchill Churchill was one of England's most prominent military and political leaders. His writings still inspire new generations of people across the globe. No one loved England more than Churchill, but his second love was Cuban cigars. He was said to smoke 8-10 cigars a day no matter where he was. His favorite brand was Romeo y Julieta. Sometimes his work required him to fly and flying at high altitudes during Churchill’s time usually required the use of an oxygen mask. Churchill refused, of course, and instead used a special mask that would still allow him to smoke while flying. He once hosted a luncheon with King Ibn Sa’ud from Saudi Arabia, who did not permit people to smoke or drink in his presence. Churchill convinced him otherwise saying that “my rule of life prescribed as an absolutely sacred rite smoking cigars and also the drinking of alcohol before, after, and if need be, during all meals and in the intervals between.” John F. Kennedy Kennedy was one of the most revolutionary, as well as most controversial, presidents of the 20th century. The US handling of the Cuban missile crisis and the Bay of Pigs has been hotly debated but the end result was the 1962 Cuban embargo. This embargo prohibited any products from the tiny island nation to enter the United States. Before signing the legislation, however, Kennedy sent his press secretary on an important mission: procuring 1,000 Petit Upmanns, his favorite Cuban cigar. Salinger outdid himself rounding up 1,200 cigars before Kennedy signed the embargo. Mark Twain The author of the literary classics “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” and “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” reportedly smoked at least 20 cigars a day. Twain was once quoted saying that “if smoking is not allowed in heaven, I shall not go.” He didn't favor any particular brand of cigars and would usually settle for whatever brand was the cheapest. However, he was not a fan of Havanas. Jack Nicholson It is a rare sight to see this actor without a cigar in hand, even on the red carpet. The Academy Award winner smoked cigarettes in the early 90s, at least a half a pack a day to calm his nerves until he switched to cigars. He said it actually helped his golf game, bringing down his handicap to 12. His favorite thing to do was light up at a Laker’s game at the Forum Stadium in LA. However, anti-smoking laws put a considerable damper on this pastime. His favorite cigar, the Montecristo, is produced in both Cuba and the Dominican Republic.
