Is Colonoscopy Worth The Risk?

Health
The word colonoscopy seems lately high on the health menu, there is nothing much else on offer apart of a bitter aftertaste. Colonoscopy is not a treatment for anything; it's only a detection method to see what's in the pipeline that shouldn't be there. When a colonoscopy is recommended do we know or have we been told of all the side effects and risks involved?

According to medical reports the rate of serious complications from colonoscopy screening is many times higher than any other screening tests on the body. The side effects and stress are just as severe or similar to problems associated with any other surgeries. Another point to consider colonoscopy screening, it is mainly recommended after the age of 50 where the body is slower to recover from any such ordeals. There are screening tests such as x-rays in the abdominal area which create another risk factor: Exposure to radiation. This exposure to radiation in the abdominal area in your body are thousands of times more potent and dangerous than any other x-rays. These are some of the screenings to detect colorectal cancer, which there is perhaps a 95 percent chance that you'll ever experience colon cancer unless you belong to a high-risk group or have a strong family history of colon cancer.

Screening tests can save lives!

Colorectal cancer is a fast-growing disease in the western world and one of the deadliest nutrition related disease. This type of cancer has become more dominant in the last couple of decades and has only developed due to bad choices of foods. Through our diet, we became more susceptible to this type of disease which puts people who are on a sloppy eating plan and a sedentary life style into a group which is a "high risk group" and more likely to get this type of disease. This is where such screening methods are often recommended because these types of tests can save lives; they help to find polyps or cancer even before you have any symptoms.

Most of the time screenings are advised after the age of 50 and repeated every three to five years depending on your overall fitness and health condition. What happens in this type of tests: Air and barium enema gets pumped into the rectum, and the solution will show polyps or tumors if they are present. This is also done by examination of the rectum and the lower part of the colon with a lighted tube, as well the use of x-rays to take dimensional images of the colon and rectum.

What are the risks?

According to independent reports the rate of serious complications from colonoscopy screening is far higher than of any other cancer screening tests. They aren't as safe as they would like us to believe. Such tests can become very stressful with many serious side effects such as internal bleeding, colon perforation, ulceration, infection, hypothermia, fluctuation of blood sugar, stroke, heart attack, pneumonia, kidney failure, irritable bowel syndrome, hard stools, bloating, abdominal cramps, and the list continues. Many of those dangers come when you have to receive sedatives for pain and discomfort during the procedure. Drugs will remove any recollection of the procedure but it can leave you with deadly side effects. According to reports a CT scan of the colon be just as good as or even better than a colonoscopy without the need for sanitation, but it still carries the risk of radiation. Another problem arises when tests are made which are not necessary. This is when money becomes an issue. The cost could vary from $500.00 to over $1000.00, and even higher; it depends on what side of town you live and who has the deepest pockets. Don't become a statistic of the money machine. Before you agree to this type of screening ask many questions and get other opinions. There is seldom talked about these risks involved or rarely get reported involving colonoscopy. The message here is: Avoid it if possible; it is safer and healthier to avoid as much as possible that can cause colon cancer. Have a close look at the food you eat, change the diet, make better food choices, and remember: This disease is largely related to food. Weigh up your odds against the risk, there is a 95% chance if not higher that you'll never experience colon cancer.
