Chamonix When the Snow Melts: Top Hiking Tips

Travel & Tourism
Hiking in the Alps is a little different to climbing up British slopes, as the higher altitude creates additional challenges – including rapidly changing weather and debris-covered paths. If you’re planning on hiking in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, there are a few things to remember so that you trip is successful. Follow these helpful tips to be prepared for every occasion and enjoy a peaceful holiday breathing in the fresh Alpine air and admiring the beautiful landscape.

Plan Ahead

Hiking in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc can be a little unpredictable as path conditions depend on the ever-changing weather. At the start of the season, the snow may not have melted yet. This can be dangerous as certain trails will be slippery, covered with old avalanche debris. As a first-timer in the Alps, the easiest way to keep yourself safe is to talk to the Resort Team and take their advice. They will be able to tell you which routes are still snow-covered and which trails are still difficult to cross. If you’re at all concerned, it might be a good idea to hire a mountain leader; this local expert will know which trails are safe and which ones should be avoided. He or she will also provide expert information about the flora and fauna!

Pack for the Weather

The weather in the Alps can change very quickly so be sure to check the forecast before you go hiking in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc. The high altitude also makes you more prone to being sunburnt, so be sure to pack a sunhat, sun cream and sunglasses. You may also want to bring lip balm with UV filter. In the summer, wearing shorts is usually sufficient, though it can get colder and windier as you gain height. Bringing zip-off trousers and light layers that you can easily slip on and off allows you to adapt your clothing to whatever weather. Bringing waterproof gear is also prudent, as a sunny morning can quickly morph into a rainy afternoon.

Refuel

Hiking in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc can be strenuous, with less oxygen and stronger sunrays. You’ll need to stay well hydrated and pack plenty of water (don’t worry about the weight, it’ll diminish as you drink). You should also pack a good lunch to keep your energy levels high. Besides, nothing beats a picnic in the mountains on a sunny day – particularly when there’s the breath-taking view of the Mont Blanc as a backdrop!

How to Get There
