When it comes to filtering your cooking and drinking water, you have many options. Oddly enough, however, what was once old is now becoming new again, and that is using a biological water system filtration method. Basic Run Down In general terms, filtering your water biologically means you use natural bacteria instead of dangerous chemicals to remove contaminants. A second step in the biological filtration approach is reverse osmosis, which balances out the H2O’s alkalinity and makes it perfect for your body’s hydrating needs. Not to mention, no matter how you slice it, a biological water system filtration is much better than the chemical one used by so many treatment plants. Microbiologist Hans Peterson explains that traditional water treatment, “sequester[s] contaminants and then remove[s] them.” The result is a dangerous sludge that is harmful for humans, animals, and the environment. Biological treatment destroys the contaminants directly in the water, which means there isn’t any harmful sludge as a result of the purifying efforts. Biological treatment also prevents the bacteria from growing again, a problem with the traditional method. Does it remove all contaminants? Yes. This water filtration system is as effective, if not more, than your municipal water plant’s treatment method. It can remove arsenate, bromated, chloroform, chromate, iron, manganese, natural organic matter, nitrate, nitrite, perchlorate, selenate and other harmful contaminants. In addition, this system makes the process of filtering water much easier. There is no need for any chemical interaction with the water prior, during or after purification. Bringing the Technology Home You can contact your municipal water treatment plant and recommend it switch to a biological water system filtration method but the person on the other line will likely hang up on you. This new/old technology is having a hard time gaining traction in the United States. All is not lost, however. You can have a mini-biological treatment system installed into your home and remove all the contaminants left behind by the municipality quickly and easily. Depending on your preference you can have either a single tap system or point-of-use system installed in your home. As you probably guessed, the single tap system is one that only filters the water coming out of one tap in your house, such as the kitchen sink. A point-of-use system filters all the water coming into your home from your municipality. The former is less expensive than the latter if you are concerned about cost. The bottom line is this: Do you want contaminants in your water? Do you want chemicals in your water that are used to remove to the contaminants in your water? No, you don’t.
