How Hair Transplant Works Hair Transplant surgery moves hair follicle from one part of the body known as the donor site to fill an area with no hair or thin hair called recipient site. Since the 1950s, doctors in the United States of America have been doing hair transplantation, but the techniques have changed over the years. The Donor Site The donor site is normally at the back of one's head and above your ears where the growth of hair is usually resistant to loss of hair. The transplanted hair will continue to grow naturally until it's permanently and firmly implanted. The success of hair transplantation depends greatly on the volume, density, and quality of your donor site. Hair transplant surgery can also be used to restore eyebrows, fill in scars that were left by surgery or accidents, chest hair, eyelashes, beard hair, and pubic hair. FUE and FUT Our hair grows in little packets known as grafts which contain 1-4 hairs. There are two ways used to extract donor hair grafts, the Follicular Unit Transplant (FUE) method and the Follicular Unit Extraction and the (FUT) method. FUE is done with a specialized surgical device that looks like a punch. The device extracts one unit of a graft at a time. This method doesn't leave a linear scar but will leave scars that are tiny at each point of puncture. The scars aren't easy to notice. FUT is also called the Strip Excision technique. It's performed by the removal of a strip containing thousands or hundreds of hair grafts from the donor site. The place where the strip was removed will remain with a scar. Trichophytic Closure will make sure the scar remains minimal, and proper planning will make sure it's not seen. After the removal of the strip, it is processed further and individual grafts are extracted under a microscope in preparation for the transplant. How long does hair transplantation procedure take? The process usually takes the whole day and is performed under sedation and local anesthesia. Results, recovery, and complications The time of recovery depends on the surgery extent. Most of the patients experience soreness, numbness, and mild pain. It is normal when hairs from the transplanted follicles start falling out within the first month and then grow back. It's possible seeing new growth within 3 months after surgery, although some patients may need to wait for 6-9 months to see the outcome. Complications with the surgery are not common. The side effects of hair restoration may include the uneven growth of hair or scarring. If the surgery results are patchy or the follicle grafts do not establish well at the recipient site, your surgeon may need to perform a follow-up surgery to rectify scarring or to transplant more follicles that will fill in thinner regions. Five percent of transplant patients experience post-operative hiccups. Another concern is the cost of the procedure which is expensive in the US ranging from $7,000 to $25,000, but there are many more affordable destinations all over the world.
