One of the many things that attract people to Croydon is its rich culture and arts scene, and just one of the venues making up the backbone of that scene is Fairfield Halls, one of the town's longest standing and most-loved arts venues. Although Fairfield Halls will close in July 2016 for a two-year redevelopment programme, we’re sure that anticipation for the revamped arts centre will make the time soar by. In the meantime, we hope you enjoy our compilation of related facts, beginning with its fascinating history... A brief history of Fairfield Halls Fairfield Halls is built on the site of Croydon’s ‘Fair Field’, which once hosted a fair in the 19th century. Air raid shelters occupied the site during World War II, before the 1962 opening of the venue that Croydon residents know and love today. The stage of the 1,801-seat concert hall was soon graced by the likes of The Beatles, Pink Floyd, The Who and many more arts and entertainment legends – the venue was even used for professional wrestling for many years. Many other renowned acts across the categories of music, comedy and theatre have paid a visit to the centre, either in the aforementioned concert hall or in the theatre or gallery, which have 755 and 400 seats respectively. A promising past, present and future... Fairfield Halls has even made appearances in several blockbuster films. The Da Vinci Code, which was released in 2006 and stars Tom Hanks, features a scene in which the main character gives a speech to students. The choice of room for the speech was none other than the building’s concert hall. The centre also appeared in the films Made in Dagenham and Cuban Fury - and we wouldn't be surprised if there were more high-profile cinematic appearances to come for the venue once it reopens in 2018. Although the two-year closure period may seem a long one for the building's many keen admirers, the ambitious nature of the £12 million modernisation plan should make it a worthwhile wait.
