What Now? Thoughts On How To Live The Second Half Of Your Life At a time in human history in which more people are passing the age of 50 than ever before, it is surely useful to ask whether many of our longstanding perceptions of middle and old age are fair. In the process, we may also consider what we can do to live more rewarding lives as many of us advance to an age that may not have been reached by our parents, grandparents and great-grandparents. There Really Can Be Life After 50 A century or so ago, the average life expectancy was under 50, meaning that those living to their 50s, 60s and beyond were not sufficiently numerous to be a great cultural force. Those days have long gone, meaning that the typical 50-year-old today can look forward to many years and decades more of living in reasonable health. However, while the objectives for the first half of your life may have been obvious – to strive, achieve, build a nest and provide – the way to live the second half of your life may be far from clear to you.
