One of the most important skills in undertaking research is the ability to come up with a topic. It is the research topic which will determine what type of research and will define the questions that will be asked in the research. The steps below will help in getting a research topic. i. Brainstorm for ideas. It is paramount to have a topic that will arouse your interest. The research will have to be unique. For you to have a lasting interest on the research, the topic will be the first step to ensure that the research process is smooth. ii. Come up with a topic which will help you read and comprehend literature. It is important to have a topic which will enable one to read generally about a topic. Get facts and general ideas about a topic. As you read on a wide array of topics and literature, you will eventually come up with a focused idea. You will manage to narrow your topic to the one that will lead to your research. iii. Make sure that the topic is manageable and that the material is available. There are topics which will make it hard for researchers to get information. When coming up with a topic, it is important to ensure that the material is readily available. iv. Come up with a list of keywords. Have a research of the keywords that are useful in your research. The keywords are what describe your research project. When reading the literature, the researcher will be required to take note of the keywords. v. Ensure that you are flexible. It is said that research topic will continue to change and improve till the last day. So the researcher will have to be flexible because they might find too much so that they will have to narrow the topic. When doing your research, you might find that some other aspect of the topic is more interesting than others. vi. Define your topics as a research question which is focused. More often, one will develop a topic from a word, and increase with by coming up with questions that point to the word. vii. Come up with a thesis statement. A thesis statement is a statement that shows the main idea of writing and helps in controlling the idea while undertaking the research.
