Three Project Ideas for Beginning Woodworkers

Construction
So, you’ve finally decided to pursue woodworking like you’ve always wanted to, but you aren’t sure where to start. That’s okay, because many people start out this way.

To begin with, you’ll want to accumulate a few basic tools. You don’t need to get crazy with it, and probably already have a few lying around your home or garage. You’ll want a miter saw, drill, power sander, hand planer, screwdriver (Philips and flat head), tape measure, hammer, and carpenter’s square. Also keep on hand a notebook, pencil, and a radio (a necessity for your work area).

Now you’ve gathered your tools, it’s time to tackle your first project. Today we’ll look at three great project ideas for beginners. In fact, it is highly recommended that these three be your very first projects, as they will start honing necessary skills without being so difficult you decide against this popular, useful hobby.

Workbench

Why: A workbench is a necessary item for your shop, which makes it perfect for your first project. Not only will you be embarking on your woodworking journey but investing in it too!

Difficulty: Building a workbench requires only the most basic tools, and is a simple, straight-forward project. It should take a complete beginner no more than a few hours to complete, unless you plan on taking extra steps like staining.

You can find easy woodworking project plans for workbench on joineryplans.com which are very simple to follow. Later, when you become better at woodworking, you can always build a more difficult bench with extra features. For now, the most basic model will serve you well.

Coffee Table

Why: A coffee table is a centerpiece for your living area, so it is a project you will get significant use out of. It is also something you can share with your family, which invokes a feeling of pride that can continue to fuel your hobby towards future projects.

Difficulty: It is very simple and uses a lot of the same tools and techniques as the work bench. It may, however, take a little additional time. Expect to spend a good afternoon (or two) on this project.

Once again, you’ll want to find easy woodworking project plans for a coffee table. Project plans are important in the beginning, because it ensures the product is aligned properly, sturdy, and safe. As you progress in your carpentry skills, you’ll eventually be able to make your own plans.

Bookshelf

Why: It is a useful item which gives you somewhere to store decorative items, books, paperwork, or anything really. It could also be given as a gift, because it is something everyone has need of.

Difficulty: Very simple. In fact, most bookshelves only make use of two board sizes – unless you wish to place a backing on yours, which will make it three.

There are many different options when it comes to what your bookshelf will look like, which will allow you to use your imagination. You can choose how tall or long it is, as well as how many shelves it contains. The finish or coloring is another choice.
