Get Out and Explore Chianti from a Base in Florence

Travel & Tourism
There’s a never-ending list of reasons why Florence is the perfect city to visit. The food, the culture, the numerous Instagrammable streets, and the stunning sunsets. It’s also one of the best-connected cities in Italy, which means you can tick off a few more must-visit destinations from your bucket list. However, if you only have time to explore one place, make Chianti your number one option.

Visit the Most Beautiful Part of Italy

Famed for its romantic landscapes of vineyards and picturesque hilltop towns, this rural haven attracts tourists from all over the world at any time of year. Not only is it beautiful, but there are just so many things to do in Chianti. Explore the region by bike, indulge in a little wine-tasting, or just spend the day ambling through one of the quaint villagers - the choices are endless.

With such a range of things to do in Chianti, you’ll first need to know how to get there. Travelling in Italy can be a little difficult sometimes so here’s our brief guide to getting around the southern region.

Rent a Car

You may have heard about the madness that is the Italian roads, especially in the countryside, which is often narrow and winding, but that shouldn’t put you off getting behind the wheel if you’re up for the challenge. If you have a long list of things to do in Chianti, a car gives you that extra freedom and flexibility to explore on your own timetable. You’ll be able to pick and choose from an array of beautiful spots.

Top tip: take a map and have a plan of where you’d like to go as the roads in the region can be confusing. If in doubt, ask a local!

Guided Tour

For the ultimate hassle-free tour of the area, a small group escorted tour is the premium option. Your expert guide will have extensive knowledge of the best things to do in Chianti so there’s no chance of missing out -- or getting lost! All you’ll have to do is to sit back and relax in a customised vehicle complete with air conditioning, extra suspension, and sound system so you can enjoy learning all the history of this stunning region. There’s no doubt that you’ll be in safe hands while you savour the very best produce of the area such as award-winning wines, olive oils, and cheeses. All you need to do is sit back, relax and enjoy the ride.

Hop on the Bus

The bus is usually the most budget-friendly travel option for those with an eye on the wallet strings. Tickets are easy to buy, either on the bus or in the local tobacco shops known as ‘tabacchi’. There’s a direct route from Florence to the historic town of San Gimignano, and although it may be the slower mode of transport, the views from the bus are definitely worth the extra time.

Top tip: timetables aren’t the most reliable in Italy, so factor in some waiting time to your schedule. Also, many buses don’t run after 7pm.

With so many things to do in Chianti, and so many ways to get there from Florence, what are you waiting for? Make Florence your next adventure and get ready to explore one of the most beautiful areas in Europe.
