A while ago, I designed myself a t-shirt for fun. It was a white t-shirt with a picture of a suit and blue tie, and on the bottom it said, "Business casual." I thought it was a clever design and wore it to a couple of professional networking events instead of a traditional business attire. When I told some of my friends this, they looked at me like I was stupid. I've gotten some responses from them like: "That's so unprofessional." "People won't take you seriously." "Hahahahahaha." Yeah I got laughed at. But it doesn't matter because I still met some amazing people. As a matter of fact, some fun conversations started because people noticed my shirt. So that got me thinking. We're taught that in order to stand out, we have to be different. But at the same time, I see everyone wearing the same-looking business attire at these events. So much for being different. And I see something similar like that with businesses I come across online too. They think that when they send emails, they have to make it graphically appealing, which is fine until it overwhelms the copy. Or they think they have to write their email copy in a professional, corporate language. Or they have to offer a discount to attract customers to buy their products and put it in the subject line in all caps. Before they know it, they're no different than every other business on the Internet. Maybe you're in a similar situation? Well things don't have to be this way. You can still have a highly successful email marketing strategy without having fancy and colorful emails. You can still sell your products without relying on discounts all the time.
